DIY Spark Plug Change
I have done this about 5 times now and its down to 35-40 mins, so figured I would do a DIY.
Tools: 3/8" drive Rachet (swivel head) Long Extension (12") BMW Spark plug removal tool (can buy at BMS for $19) Medium Extension (6") #10 socket Stuff to do beforehand: 1. Gap your plugs if you so desire 2. Unplug ground in the back if you so desire Steps: 1. Remove plastic cover on top of turbos 2. Remove intakes - follow the process for whatever intake you may have. If the intake can be swiveled away then not necessary to completely remove 3. Disconnect the DME harness on both sides - three types of plugs a. Press a notch and move the arm to push out b. Standard side clips c. Put the top section and it pushes out 4. Yank the DME's out (actually yank...) - no need to undo the coolant lines or unscrew anything... you will be able to sort of keep them on the side 5. Pry the coil tabs - you pull them up and it will push out the connector 6. Put the 6" extension through the hold and pull from both sides - way easier than trying to use your finger 7. On the driver-side, you have to unscrew (#10 socket) the reservoir... just move it to the side a bit - no need to remove any of the hoses 8. Unscrew the plugs with the magnetic socket and put the new ones in - TORQUE appropriately 9. Push the coils back on - you can insert the connector, close the tab and then push all at the same time... makes it easier 10. Re-install the DME - connect the harness plugs (both sides) 11. Re-install the reservoir 12. Re-install the intakes 13. Put the engine cover back on 14. Connect the battery ground Voila.... done! Last edited by allmotor_2000; 10-19-2016 at 06:59 PM.. |

I'm getting ready to change the plugs on my '13 M5 this weekend, and wanted to make sure that simply unplugging the DME and replugging after the job won't cause any trouble. Can someone validate this? Is there a need to disconnect the battery, or is that just an optional extra safety step?
Thanks for the help |

I want to thank the OP for putting this DIY together. Extremely helpful to know this can be done at home without paying the dealership a ton of money. Just changed the plugs without any issues. The majority of the job really is just gaining adequate exposure of the coils, having the specific thin walled spark plug socket, very long socket extensions, and patience disconnecting the DMEs. Thanks guys.

Just did this today after developing misfires post intake/tune, super easy. Went with a 2-step colder NGK @ .020" gap.
