If any body is looking for good prices try a rolex dealer who sells under the name .ancient and modern /johny marr in blackburn up north ,They always have a good stock of new rolex available at good discounts also the unavailable models like steel daytonas /milgauss at huge premiums

Just a word of warning though 'Ancient and Modern' are not official Rolex Authorised Dealers. Although they are probably a reputable jeweller, who knows the provinance of the watches they sell. I am not sure if you would also get the official 2 year warranty that you get with new from an AD. I spoke to them before I bought my wifes Rolex diamond dial datejust, the price they offered was only marginally lower (£50 or so) than the discounted price I negotiated with my local AD.

yes
Most of the watches they sale are from european rolex dealers .one other thing is that not all dealers will negotiate on prices .I have bought plenty from my local AD and its about 24% discount on 18k models and approx 15-17% on run of the mill rolex and 0% on sports models .And they do go wrong I had one that the motor came loose in side the watch after about a year and my wifes latest runs fine but the quick date change facility is fu----.I think its where she leaves it parked on top of a red hot radiator ,I have asked her a million times to consider what she is doing but to no avail. She has her eye on a white 18k lady date just with diamond shoulder and bezel and a dark mop dial with diamond markings. very trick. One further thing i have realised in the last 15 yrs of buying Rolex is they dont loose shit loads like bmws .As peter mentioned if you buy wise and look after them they certainly hold there money expecially the steel sports range and a 16610 i bought for £1770 in 1993 is proberbly still worth that now trouble is i gave it to my father ,so when he pops his clogs i will retreive it.Has any body taken a look at the new 18k yachtmaster. imho it looks crap

Yacht Master 2
I too think it is hideous, much prefer my Yachtmaster 16622 in S/S and platinum.
With reference to Ancient and Modern I was warned not to buy from them by a watch buddy of mine who said somebody he knew bought from them and it was a fake. In the end I bought my TT Daytona from my local AD and after negotiating I only ended up paying £300 more for an M series straight from Rolex. Steve |

There have been a few of these watch threads lately and I'm kind of suprised how many people are into expensive watches.
Can someone explain the attraction of spending upwards of £5k on a watch, when you can buy one for £100 that looks nice and tells the time just as well? |

There are a lot of nice watches out there but it comes down to personal choice.
I accept that a far less expensive watch tells the time just as well, indeed I own and wear watches that have cost me less than £50 that keep as good a time as my Rolexes. Steve |

With most things spending more gets you a better product. So a £50k car will probably be 'better' in a tangible way than a £10K one. But .. what makes expensive watches better - apart from the brand name on the front? Isn't it just brand snobbery? |

I am just guessing
But i suppose you could say a car is just a car and buy a TATA whatever piece of shit .You buy what you fancy/can afford .I was told by a friend who owns our local Rolex ad where it and enjoy it whatever is your prefrence rolex /omega/tag etc etc .I wouldnt think ancient and modern sell fakes those guys are well respected in the buisness they operate in .

But with watches it's different ... a £15K Rolex doesn't perform it's function any better than a £500 watch. I don't think it's about the tangible value of materials either .. amount of gold or diamonds doesn't dictate the cost. Arguably value is ascribed to the quality of craftsmanship, but why is that valuable when it doesn't actually make the object work better? I actually really like watches as objects, but I just don't understand why certain brands are so expensive - and valued for their cost and exclusivity. I personally like swatches for this exact reason. |

Interestingly I bought a new Omega Seamaster from an AD in the sale last week and got a really good deal. Someone is selling the same watch on ebay for more than I paid for my new one. Now that really did put a smile on my face. Miopyk |

Oh right, i really didnt know that at all. But does it have to be a specialist/collectors watch like your new one Oli that people are willing to pay top dollar for 2nd hand or is it all brand name watches which in excess of 2-3k that go up in value and would be easy to sell on if desired?

Tag's dont generally go up in value - I just love the look and feel of them, my new one eventually will as it was a limited run. Rolex's hold their money very well, loosing approx only 15% or so if kept in good condition but once again, eventually they will go up - A friend of mine always buys them with spare money, and if he needs to free up some cash he will just sell it back to the dealer, I think Omega are much the same, then you have Cartier, Weil etc etc

I must admit I like the looks of a good watch. As for accuracy, my boss sets his Rolex from my Casio Wave Ceptor.
I have lots of fake/replica watches that I bought in the far east, some are poor copies, some fool most people, ranged from £5.00 upwards. I think my favourites are my Tag Heuer Carrera and Breitling Navimeter. Regards Chris

Only a replica, but it's quite a good one.
