M50i - which exterior trim to go with?
After a year of postponing my order for various reasons, I've finally decided to order an M50i in Tanzanite Blue II. After discussing the possibilities with my son, I'm really having a tough time deciding between two options;
A) Cerium Grey trim with 747M Cerium rims B) Extended Shadowline trim with 742M Black rims The Cerium trim really helps make the M50i a little different and unique, while the all black trim looks really great, but I wonder if it will look dated in the not to distant future (i plan on keeping the X5 for many years) Looking for some forum perspective.... |

This is what I ordered w/TBM2 and ext shadow line w/ 22"747 in cerium gray wheels. My build date is week 37, mid sept. I waffled on the Ext Shadow line and Std. Cerium trim...in the end my CA felt the Ext Shadow will pull off an awesome look! I have black wheels on my Vette and thought the 747 22''s will be easier to clean. fix the poll to include a blend of shadow line and 747. the badges are still in Cerium gray.

Yah I noticed in the online build that the badges were still Cerium. It looks like only the X5MC will get black badging.
I only included the two options that I was considering. We didn't really like the shadowline with Cerium rims, so I didn't include it as an option in the poll. |

It’s all personal preference. I don’t care for the blackout look at all. Use your gut. You can always get the opposite parts later and swap them at a reasonable cost.

Option A without a doubt. I really dislike black rims. I think it is a passing fad & will look very dated in a couple years. And the 747 wheels are the best looking I've seen for the X5.

I voted for the black out, but on the second thought cerium grey would maybe look better on the blue exterior.
Plus you're going for a more luxurious interior look with the white/blue full merino...all black trim goes better with a more sporty rather that luxury look I guess. |

I think on tanzanite blue, the cerium grey is a better look. the contrast looks great.
If you were doing white or a lighter silver, I would go extended shadowline and black wheels. good luck with your build!

Cerium. You always have the option of buying carbon fiber mirror caps, which would look nice.

I love black wheels on a white or silver car.
I don't love "those" black wheels though. I was "this" close to ordering them, and then did a google image search on "real" pictures of them.... and I just didn't kike the look of them. The rears don't have an aggressive dish.... which to me, just appeared like black painted "stockers". A more aggressive/wider black wheel will look great. For the stock ones, go with the grey ones. |

Black roof rails, black window trim, black bumper. I'm not much on a multi-colored exterior, and some would argue even silver badges clash. Extended Shadowline. Swap out roof rails, bumper and window trim for Cerium, works for me, and would look good on the blue IMO.

Once the M50i became available for MY2020, along with TBII, I knew I either wanted all Cerium, or all black. Thanks everyone for your input and participation in the poll. I've finally made my decision and will post details in the next couple of days, as time permits... |

I am SOOOO glad the extended shadowline trim looks so good in person! The configurator doesnt reflect the paint properly (much lighter on the website) and I was beginning to have my doubts as I wasnt a big fan on the color combination, but this picture helped alleviated any worries! Same wheels as well! Thanks for the pictures!

I was originally looking at Extended Shadowline with 742M wheels, however, at the time the configurator showed cerium grey mirrors too regardless. So I decided to get the cerium wheels thinking I would still get cerium mirrors and the M Performance exclusive wheels would match the mirrors. Unfortunately for the UK market, all black wheels are not offered as an option. Quote:
I was meant to collect our X5 last weekend, however, I have postponed it for two weeks now owing being away for work. Apparently, it is believed to be one of the first M50i's to arrive in the UK. |

Well I finally placed my order. For anyone interested in seeing the details, have a look here;
Order placed for 2020 M50i in Tanzanite Blue II I also decided to get a second set of rims, likely with all-season tires, that will not be all-black, which is partly why I decided to go with black rims for the order. I'm currently deciding between the 741M, which unfortunately are only available in Orbit Grey, and (my preference) the 765M (from X3M, X4M). The 765M come with black 2-tone so I think they will look good with the extended shadowline trim. Both are 21" rims so I should be able to get A/S tires. Thanks again for voting in the poll and providing your comments. |

Nice build! Got the bi-colored rims on mine, but adhering to my own philosophy:

I prefer black..... but that's just personal preference.
However, I would advise black anyway. I was just at the BMW dealer yesterday, and I saw an M340i with the cerium grey grill, wheels, and mirrors. It looked really cool at first. Then.... I realized that none of the colors matched. The grill looked almost bronze (which looked amazing).... the mirrors looked silver, and the wheels looked like a shiny grey. All looked good..... but didn't match..... so I kinda thought it didnt look right. |
