Chadillac2000's 2016 BMW M5 Competition Build Thread
It’s always fun to start a new build thread, but this one is especially exciting. For the past 10 years or so, I’ve exclusively driven BMWs -- started with a 6MT 2002 BMW M3, moved to a roomier automatic 2008 BMW 535i, and then eventually to the car I’ve owned for the past four years: a well-sorted single turbo 6MT 2008 BMW 135i. This time however, I wanted a sedan with a usable backseat for the new baby, non 6MT so the wife can drive it occasionally, and something fun to drive. In my eyes, that narrowed it down to the F80 M3 or the F10 M5. After doing a ton of research and deciding to keep my 135i, the F10 M5 made more sense.
I kept track of the market for months, and ultimately ended up purchasing a fully loaded 2016 BMW M5 with the Competition Package and only 40,000 miles on the odometer. The only caveat being that the car was located in Portland, Oregon and I am in Asheville, NC. Once we transferred the funds and arranged shipping, I endured nearly a full month before the car was dropped off at my house. I was a bit nervous as this was the first car that I purchased sight unseen, but everything was accurately described. I have quite a bit planned for this car and parts already in hand, so stay tuned for updates, but here are the first photos I took after giving the car a thorough cleaning to remove all the ash from the western wildfires it had picked up during its time in Oregon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Love having this combo in the garage so far. ![]() Wanted to share this quick clip of the night the car arrived -- my wife and 6 month old daughter wanted to hear the car for the first time, which elicited a priceless reaction from my daughter. It seems I may have another enthusiast in the family. Needless to say, I was pretty excited too. I have exhaust modifications planned, but the car already sounds amazing as-is with the Competition Package mufflers. Here's a more proper video clip of cold start. |

Congrats on the car and welcome to F10 M5 ownership!
![]() Not sure how familiar you are with the options available on the F10 M5, but that car does not look 'fully loaded' to me (no B&O, no extended leather, no RSE, no night vision)? |

And valid point regarding the options. This one is missing all those. I should have clarified that I was considering anything with executive and comp options as "fully loaded" in my eyes. |

Congrats!
I had a similar situation whereas I had an E92 M3...non-usable backseat. Have an X5 for the wife and baby, but needed something useable with a backseat in case. So therefore...I thought a 750+ HP, tuned/well-modified F10 M5 would do the trick. My daughter loves it....wife not so much ![]() |

I quite like the style of the Competition Pack wheels on the F10 shape though. They also set it apart from the other F10 M5s (not that there is a lot of them out there in any event). |

Congrats on the new F10! Buying a car like this sight unseen is one heck of a gamble, though!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome -- ownership is going swell so far! Regarding the 601M vs 343M wheels, there were two cars that I'd narrowed it down to at the end. Almost identical specs, but one of which had the 601M wheels and the other had the 343M. Ultimately I decided the cast 601M wheels didn't do it for me aesthetically and went with the car that had the black 343M forged wheels.
Last weekend I was able to find a few hours to knock out some small, mostly visual modifications. A set of OEM BMW Performance gloss black front grills, a set of gloss black side grills, IND front and rear painted reflectors, IND painted gloss black M5 badge, BMS 12mm front and rear spacers with extended bolts, Autotecknic carbon fiber diffuser, and Rennline phone mount. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This weekend I was able to take the car on its first real outing since I've had it -- a trip to Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina at 5,945 feet above sea level. After arriving, I had a chance to snap some pictures and show off some of the freshly installed parts. All the little things have already made a big difference, especially in the rear. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

^^Looks gorgeous bud
![]() Where did you find the two fin Autotecknic diffuser? I was told directly by autotecknic that the two fin diffuser was discontinued in favor of the three fin. |

Thank you sir! I actually picked up the two fin version pre-owned from a fellow forum member, as well as a set of VRSF catless downpipes. I noticed that Autotechnik only offers the three fin version now, and most of the other available diffusers including the OEM BMW Performance one, are three fin as well, but I have to say that I prefer this two fin design. Some of the three fin versions look a little busy. Anything is an upgrade over the OEM plastic though!

^^agree with everything you said.
I had originally ordered the two fin design from Vivid, but then found out it was an old model so the order was cancelled. I ultimately went with the OEM MPerformance diffuser which I’ve been happy with. Car looks great! Excited to see what you have planned. |

Congratulations on your recent purchase. The car looks great and I have no doubt more modifications are on the way. Longtime follower of your 135 build on N54Tech.
I have an O.T. question: How was your experience with the shipping company, and would you recommend them? Thanks, Steve |

As far as the shipping goes, I used Reliable Carriers as recommended by the dealership I purchased from. I've used UShip to ship three other vehicles for business purposes, and that went fine so I explored enclosed shipping options there as well. I got UShip offers in the $2,100-$2,400 range, but ultimately went with Reliable at $2,750 because of their reputation. Transportation was perfect, which is what really matters, but it took a while and the communication was minimal after payment and before pickup; following pickup the driver communicated with me perfectly fine. From the moment I paid until the car was in my hand, it took almost a full 4 weeks, which was my biggest complaint given the amount of money they charged. If you're not in a huge hurry, I'd recommend them though. |

@chadillac2000: gorgeous car and amazing pics. I lived in NC for almost 7 years, truly miss my great times in the Smoky Mountains, on the Blueridge Parkway and at the coast. Do you know Hanging Rock State Park, about 30 mins from GSO? If I'm back in the GSO area one day to visit friends or for business purposes, we could meet 👍🏻
