You should have been off the summer tires a few weeks ago. Get some nice winters.

snow tires will be your best option, but if you are looking for chains

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ED4Q1Q

or if you don't need the best.

Agreed, snow tires are probably the best way to go. Chicago snows often anyways, right? The clearance on our vehicles are pretty small. I have the 162 tires and I'd be very scared to put chains on them. Might risk damaging the tire and wheel well.

You might want to check your local auto parts store. I got my snow tire cables from Schucks along with my snow tires. Got the chains there for $35 bucks and it worked well with the snow tires. There was a little more clearance than my summer tires. I'm running 225/40/R17 with blizzaks LM25. Needed chains for the passes.

No

A. They are illegal in IL
B. They probably ride like shit
C. They look about as good as the girl with the huge retainer strap around her neck that holds her braces in place.
D. To have any chance of stopping/steering you need 4 ($800) at which point you should just buy tires.

But alas you don't want to buy tires so I guess you're stuck.

Chains/cables are not meant to be used on a full time-basis. Just mountain passes, unplowed back country roads, etc... Good luck crusing down the freeway in Chicago with chains on.

Buy some winter tires. Not sure why you are against them.

you can legally use chains to prevent sliding or skidding. I already looked up the statute. and anyone who thinks I'll be riding any faster than 30 Mph or when streets have been plowed are pretty dumb. these are gonna be used for when streets have yet to be plowed or when there's significant ice build up. prob use them a max of 5-7 times per year and only put 40 miles on them. trying to see if those Thule k-summits will clear the outside part of the fender. well see but thanks for the comments

I have winter tires... I want studded winter tires.

Chains are popular... in Alps.

I nearly puked in my mouth when I read the recommendations for chains. Guys...read Mike Miller's stuff in Roundel first. Then try here - http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/...jsp?techid=116

If ur driving a phat 7 or some hearty 10 cylinder M machine...........in Yukon territorry, chains might be a thought. Other than that...u have to ask urself, why am I putting my < 3/M/5 series through the wringer? - A nice set of 21st century Snows... will move that lightweight E....chasis across the highway well enough.

I used CABLES twice this year so far. I have not had a problem with them, but I also don't have ZSP.
