WTF RUN FLATS ARE RUBBISH, RIPPED AT 30mph - 4 WEEK OLD CAR!
Right.....i was on my way home last night when i got a low pressure warning, so then i left on the next junction (less then a mile away) driving at 30mph, the car started shaking, the wheels felt wobbley, so i had to stop. couldnt carry on driving cos i know there must be something wrong and the 'run flats' werent even working how they shud! called the SOS from the car...no response!! phoned bmw emergency services, and they came 2 hours later and picked up the car and dropped it home....
today i had the car picked up to go to the dealership, at is was being put onto the lorry, i noticed the tyre was totally wripped...i have only had the car exactly 4 weeks from today, less then 900 miles have been done! when it came to bmw, they checked it and saw the tyre had melted to the wheel, wripped etc...they checked it and sed there is a tiny nail in the middle. so yh, ok, a tiny nail......how the hell did it get to this? its ment to still be able to drive upto 50mph, even if totally depressurised! dealer did not know wot to say really, but said they are not covering the tyres!! a new tyre cost £359!!!!! WTF and i cant even trust the run flats nomore! they sed they will do it for £304.99....even so, well expensive, but i needed the car and had to pay My sales woman said that this is unfair and that i should write a letter to complain etc...which i will. oh and guess wot? while i was talking to her, we both noticed the roof is leaking!!! now i have to book it in for the roof to be sorted out - least thats under warranty though! Although the car is great, and i love it...im very disapointed with the service they have provided! |

It looks to me like the rim was damaged as well, no? If that's the case, you can't blame the runflat tire for bursting if you hit a huge pothole or similar to cause the damage

Maybe your TPMS/FTM gave out the warning too late (?) and subsequently you were driving on the zero pressure RFT longer/further than you should've . You might want to get those systems checked out as well.

I got it all checked, i only did one mile after i got the warning? they sed i can do up to 150 miles, but only did one mile and this was the result. something is not right! they said to also try and contact bridgestone and see what they say? but i doubt they would even care

Do you know what the air pressure in the tire was? As far as I know the TPMS gives you a warning if the pressure goes below a certain level (which you set when you reset the TPMS). Perhaps your TPMS was reset when the tires were at a low air pressure, so you were driving with an grossly underinflated tire for many miles even before the warning lamp came on. Also, you just might have gotten a defective tire
Either way, I hope complaining will get you reimbursed. For what it is worth, maybe people have used RFT on the circuit and they work fine |

Oh yeah....later today after they fitted this tire, i went to a tire specialist, and they checked all the tire pressure and said they are over inflated - and thats how they came from the dealer!!

I'm not surprised. Every single new car I have taken delivery of had the wrong tire pressure, usually by a large margin. Infiniti delivered my car with over 50 psi in one of the tires and the mid-40s in the other 3. With my BMW it was in the 20s.

If it was over 50psi you should let the dealer know, because that is the max for the stock sport package RFT. the pressure for sustained driving over 100 mph is higher than the 'normal' air pressure, so I wouldn't jump to conclusions unless you know the actual pressure.

This is going to be an uphill battle of he said/she said. Low pressure warnings turn on almost immediately after it senses a pressure decrease. I drove over a metal object at 70mph and within 30 seconds the Low Pressure warning came on. Regardless, I know runflats are extremely expensive to replace. Good luck and keep us posted!

You need to check the pressures and reset the tpms.
BTW I think you'll find the tpms does not measure pressure but senses any difference in rolling diameter/wheel speed due to loss of pressure if any wheel differs. It must be reset when you have checked/altered the pressures. If reset when the pressures are wrong it will assume all is OK even though it is not! And don't trust the garage or tyre center, check the tyres yourself with a reliable gauge and not one 'dangling on a hose' at a filling station. |
