I’ve handed my notice in.

On Monday I handed my notice in at work.

I’m a tool design engineer by trade and the manufacturing industry has been on a steady decline for some time now. There aren’t many companies in left in the UK which do the type of work I’m qualified for. I am currently travelling 80 miles to and from work every day. I have done this for the last 7 years now and I have had enough. I get very little time to spend with my young family on the evenings and week ends are taken up with doing the mundane tasks.

The scary part is just how much all this travelling has cot me over the years in time and money. By my calculations the car has cost 28p a mile and this is bound to go up with the increasing cost of fuel and each year I have spent 795 hours in the car just going to and from work not counting those numerous time I have been stuck in traffic due to an accident or weather.

So it’s time for a complete change.

My new role will be as a teaching assistant, working for and alongside my wife. I can’t go into any more detail yet (if I told you I would have to kill you) but if all goes well it could be very good for us.

A big plus for me is that I will only be working from 8 till 2 Monday to Thursday and have little if any travelling. Which will give me a lot more time to spend with the family. Also the car will get to stop in the garage this winter.

Sounds like a brave move, good luck to you and I genuinely hope it all works out. Putting family first is a good move.

Well done mate, I've just handed my notice in as well. I'm having 3-6 months off as I've got my first child due in a couple of weeks then I'm going to be a house husband.

Courageous move Skid and I hope it works out for you. Dare I say it that the new career sounds much more emotionally rewarding than the tooling industry! Good luck and keep us posted as to how you get on

Thanks Tony,

I'm leaving on a good note and there may be an offer of some contract work from my soon to be ex employer.

Now that I won't be needing a car that gives good mpg I may look at moving up the performance ladder some time in the future.

I have a little project in mind which will keep my urge to build things at bay.

all the best with the job move sometimes you reach a point in your career when you know you have to make a change for the good even though it can be a bit daunting

About to change jobs myself-just awaiting an offer letter to drop onto my mat!!

Yeah, good move mate. So much more to life than work, gotta get the right balance.

I am thinking of learning the stock market, jacking in my job and start trading from home

Good luck! Working a job you hate and can't stand is one of the worst things ever. I stuck with my first retail job for about 2 years and hated a good 1.5 of those years just because I couldn't find another job. It was the most miserable experience in any job I've ever had.

How do you intend to go about this? Only asking because it's something I am interested in too...but there's too much BS out there and loads of people willing to sell you courses etc which are just scams.
