Some Capris

Following on from Dave_3's restoration project, here are some photos of Capris. I'm going to show them on separate posts because I appear not to be able to mix photos and text unless I store the photos off-site.

Firstly, my 1971 MkI 3000E shown here at the Festival of Wheels at the NEC in August 1988, followed by my 280 with other, German Capris at a "Capri Treffen" in Mannheim in May 1990.

Apologies if the photos are a bit on the large size, I've already reduced them by 50%.

At the Capri Treffen, our eyes got opened to what you could do to a Capri. Here is a MkI RS 2600 which has been breathed upon ever so slightly, together with the engine compartment of another RS 2600

A lot of the cars had wide body alterations and they had the same size back wheels as a Countach - which was amazing at the time (10J x 15").

Here's a rare one - a MAKO Capri. I don't remember much about the Mako save that it was brutal and restricted to Germany - perhaps Dave might know. This one appears to be based on a JPS Special.

Proof that the Germans can do a trick interior but - OMG - furry dice

A cream interior from way back and my favourite paint job at the show. In real life, the hues of the colours and the execution were much much better than in a photo.

To finish off, proof that a graceful convertible could be made in the '70s - this was taken at a show at Ingliston near Edinburgh in 1988.

I have 100's of late Eighties photos of Capris having had a few. I am sure I have a picture of that red Crayford convertable from a show in Birmingham in the same year.

Pick up a copy of this months Retro Cars mag. A very nice green MkI in there

80s bodykits. Remember the wide boy kits for 205s ?

Never heard of a "Mako" before, though notice that is a Zurich numberplate.

I used to own a '76 3 litre Capri Ghia, Black with black vinal roof with black upholstery. It had the single head lights which I think looked better that the
later dual headlight models. It was two years old when I had it with 6k on the clock. A lovely motor!
I can recall one weakness: the brakes. They could have been better and you had to be for ever prepared if you motoring up in the 80's or so. The stopping distances were long
It was a true head turner and in it's day you could see off all motors except Jags and the like.

It was supposedly 160bhp but was really closer to 150. It did come with an LSD however but to cure the famous tail waggle, I fitted Tickford A-frames which absolutely transformed the rear of the car.

Other mods included, Tickford walnut fascia, with a Momo wood steering wheel, central remote locking, electric windows, 500w sound system, car alarm, car phone installation (very new in 1988!) and lambswool carpet mats. I sprayed the black vinyl rear spoiler body colour and got a LHD remote mirror for a left hand drive car and replaced the small fixed mirror on the passenger side.

Despite having a farm cart rear suspension, it rode a hell of a lot better than my E92 - though it did rattle a lot more.

I remember refurbishing Austin Princess 4 pot calipers for my cousins 2.8i. When his fellow enthusiasts saw them they all wanted me to do theirs. Apparently it was a popular mod.
