Golf GTi - Buying help needed!!
Hi all,
I'm off to look at a Golf GTi later on and I wondered what I should be aware of... Car is a 2005 MKV and has the 2.0 TSI engine. Sat Nav, no other options I can see but I guess I'd like to know if there are any 'must haves' etc! Any problems, common faults or work that should have been done etc? Car has done 64k miles and I doubt it has had the 'big' 60k service but it does have BMW SH (bizarrely) as it was owned by a BMW tech. Thanks in advance. Matt |

the 5 hole wheels are both 17 and 18 inch, the monza are the bigger version with a much nicer machined finish but very similar in style (about a £500 option when new I recall)
Winter pack is, from memory, heated seats, heated mirrors and something else I cant remember. (my mrs used to have one, really good car) |

Just bought a 2010 MK5 Golf GTi 2.0 TSI 3 door.
Leather, DSG, Monza Alloys winter pack etc. Registered in June 2010 and has 24 miles on the clock. £19,200 from a main dealer. £8K off list!!!!!!!!! What a bargain I know its not a MK 6 but who cares for that sort of deal. The dealer had 5 in from a cancelled MOD contract, sold all of them in 3 days. |

Personally, I went for the 17"'s because it makes the car handle better and them diamond cut 18" are a nightmare when parking and subsequent repairs if you get it wrong. Mine was the manual and I wouldn't have it any other way. I can see the point in having a DSG is you do allot of town driving - but for me, it's too gimmiky and totally spoils the whole driving experience. There are a few nice extra's which look great and are handy. The Xenon's are excellent on the GTi's and the winter pack adds nice little touches such as heated mirrors, seats and headlight washers. Try one with the uprated speaker system. The standard stereo/auto-changer which goes with the speakers is excellent. I had mine re-mapped to around 265bhp and it totally transformed the car from a hot hatch to a total hooligan. I highly recommend a re-map. Good luck. |

Just traded mine in for a new Skoda Octavia Greenline due to baby on way and giving up job but my MK5 was the best car I've ever owned.
I had no reliability issues over 38500 miles, only major irritation was the Recaro seats kept coming apart but cloth recaros like mine are incredibly rare. Definitely map it, mine was oettinger/e-maps, the torque post map is incredible, truly fast car without going much over 3500 rpm. A mate who owned a R32 was astounded by it's grunt. |

Ive had 3 MKV golfs. Remember at 5 years it is cambelt service. They are bullet proof apart from a few niggles, but nothing serious - Look on MK5golfgti.co.uk, for more help, or PM me any questions, I pretty much know them inside out.
Nice options are the 18" Monza's, but they look pretty much the same bar the colouring, as the 17s. And as PRT says, Simon at Emaps uses Oettinger maps, which make the vehicle into an absolute hoot, bar the wooden brake feel, and still return 40mpg. If you phone 0800 083 3914 - VWUK, they will tell you the full spec, and service history. If that is no good, my friend is selling a 2006 model, 46000 miles, with leather, xenons, bluetooth, privacy, rear PDC, ipod18" wheels and full VW SH, in black for approx £11k - It is a lovely car, with a great spec, and I can vouch for it.

She wanted leather as the dog will be in the boot most of the time and leather is easier to clean. It will be me who ends up cleaning it!! Genuine VW dog guard on order and clear protective film being applied on the rear bumper! |

She is not even that bothered Managed to sell her Defender for practically what she paid for it (owned for 12 months) which was amazing!
I told her if she did not want it I would buy it instead and make an easy profit, same car with 1200 miles on the VW used site around £23k |

MK5 is good looking car. I had 2.0 GTI, with damp valves fitted, short shift and big exhaust, chipped. It is amazing car, but fuel cost was amazing too.

Hi Gents,
Well I agreed to buy the car!! Got a very good price for a vehicle which does everything I need it to, primarily including Nav and a good, strong feel. Thanks for all the very good advice. Which is the best forum for Golfs? Matt |

go to www.golfgti.co.uk (where I am still a mod, despite not owning a gti for about 6 years).
Is a mine of information. Speak to Creepy coupe - I knew him from there before he joined here - he's a mine of information

One thing I wish my mkV had was the center armrest, this also gives rear heating vents if my memory serves me correctly. It is a total pain to retro fit, parts alone cost around £600. If your car hasn't cruise that can be retro fitted at a dealer for around £150 it was a £300 factory fit option! Go figure. The mkV GTi is a great car by the way, VW went ott when they built it. I think they have ditched the multi link rear suspension on the mk6 to save money. Something to have a look at are the door sealing rubbers, they are only glued on and had a habit of coming off. Also the door skins are bolted on and on some cars the upper bolts by the mirrors fell out and the skin started to pull away. They were bolted on for ease of repair. You could have a look at ukmkvs Mark |

My boss at work has a 06 GTi with DSG, owned from new.
He had it serviced a couple of months ago and was told (as it was four years old, despite only having 30K miles) it needed cambelt, DSG oil change, brake fluid plus the usual oil / filters etc.... He just said "OK, do what is required". Are you ready for the bill.... £850. Yup thats GBP, all 850 of them. Yikes! I would say it goes really well, though, and that DSG is smooooth.. Good luck with your new car! (I've had a MKII and MKIV and both were great)
