EAS/MS Spacers integrity: Look what happened!
I've been using this MS spacers since last year. Purchased and had great beliefs on the quality except for Saturday when I took off one of my rear wheels to clean my wheel wells and see what happened.....
Purchased these brand new directly from EAS.... Macht Schnell/EAS please let me know what would the cause would have been. I don't even use the car as much, don't even track it, etc. Good thing it didnt happen when I'm in the car driving with the kids.... Any inputs, help, etc? Thanks!

Yikes. Glad nothing bad happened. FYI. I've been using turner motorsports spacers and many track days and removals without issue. Check them out.

...and this is PRECISELY why not to use spacers. You either get your wheels with the proper offset or you better stick to 20 mph....

Looks to me like that happened because you got the 10mm spacers and the hub on your car was slightly long, which caused the spacer to break when you torqued the wheels down. I don't care who makes the spacers, if you are using 10mm or under and it has the integrated hub extender on the spacer then you run the risk of this happening.

bottom line, if this is a reality with 10mm and less spacers then they should come with a disclaimer. Im sure this is a VERY rare instance, but still completely unaceptable. Glad you saw it before anything bad happened...

This is why most tire shops will refuse to mount spacers on your car. They are inherently risky, from an engineer's viewpoint.

This is a disclaimer from the Turner Motorsport website about their 10mm spacers:
"A note about 10mm spacers: Any 10mm spacer is considered a custom fitment. The stock hubcentric lip on BMWs can stick out by as much as 11mm. This leaves a gap between the spacer and the hub which seriously compromises safety. We recommend using a larger spacer (12mm and larger do not have this issue) or check that the lip sticks out less than 10mm." Sounds like good advice... |

Even though that sucks, I don't think it's going to terribly compromise safety. The primary purpose of that is to perfectly center the wheel on the hub. It's not like that little ring provides any structural rigidity.
It makes perfect sense how 10mm is just a scary size with the stock ring protruding into the spacer, making for a thin ring connection. It's funny to assume this would make the wheel fall off on the highway, flipping the car and killing puppies. |
