BMW RFT vs. Spike Strip
So this morning I was reading about a guy trying to out run a state trooper in Washington state and they used a spike strip to try and stop his vehicle. That got me thinking!
What do you think would happen if our cars w/ rft's ran over a spike strip? Would it deflate and keep going? Or would it fall apart upon deflation? They're not made to evade stuff like that... |

it would deflate, at which point he would have approximately .250 minutes before you started grinding your car down into the pavement.
once you hit a spike strip, its game over.

I don't think an RFT would survive it honestly. Seeing how a spike strip has multiple spikes and is very wide, I would think that the spikes would take out/destroy some of the sidewall too as the tire rolls over it and the sidewall is what an RFT uses to continue to drive on with a loss of pressure. I could see the tire just getting completely shredded by the spikes, but I'm just speculating.

Only one way to find out...
Who's on the forum is up to starting a high speed pursuit? You must have fun-flats though! Then come back and report how your tires held up to the spike strips and/or shotgun blasts to your side walls.

my RFTs are in my garage awaiting lease return in 2 years. Theyre brutal. Now that I know they won't even stand up to a spike belt I feel better about yanking them off.

Agreed. You won't get far. Spike strips do more than puncture. They are hollow like a straw and break off inside the tire when driven over to allow air to escape faster. With a RFT tire completely out of air, it won't take long to shred the sidewall.

Believe it or not I drove on a RFT for a month before I realized it was flat. My TPMS kept saying front right low air, when I went to go fill it up it says 0psi. I filled it up every day for a week and finally let it go because it was freezing outside 2 winters ago. Needless to say the rep at BMW said how long have you been going like this? I said ehh a month. He was amazed and shook his head and said I was lucky. And yes I exceeded 80mph at times with the flat but, never maintained speed because I would start to feel vibration and stop speeding.
Then again, I don't know how severely it was damaged. It could of been just a pin hole or something minor. |
