Why are wheels never flush with fender?
Other than a Porsche GT3, I dont think I've ever seen a new car with wheels even close to flush. Does anyone have an answer?

mmm you sure you looked properly? Or maybe you talk only about stock cars not being flush?
Do some research online for hellaflush. All the aftermarket wheels I bought in my life had to be flush w/o spacers. But if they're not, a set of spacers could help you getting closer to the fender; and at the same time, getting some more room for clearance.

Too much of a chance the wheels will rub and damage the panels....then the auto maker has to cover the damage because of a poor design.
The GT3 is a light car and has a pretty stiff suspension. |

The GT3 suspension geometry causes the wheels to go up and in on compression so they don't rub.

I mean new cars. Look at Ferrari, Porsche, Maseratti....virtually every car maker in the world. I always get aftermarket wheels to fix the problem and can"t understand why most of this gap can't be filled at the factory. Look at Maser coupe. Porsche Boxster.....

You could say that my car is hellaflush and I get zero rubbing and my I didnt had to roll anything. When you got the exact specs of the wheels you need, this is what you can expect. So with that in mind, why arent the manufacturer do that kind of homework while designing their wheels?

im considering Maserati Gran Turismo and i find out the wheels setup on it looks weird....Big gap and the rear wheels go all the way in. Stock setup is always conservative

Gran Turismo is a spectacular looking car other than the ENORMOUS gap. I'd love to know their reason. That thing sounds incredible too. |

I think I remember reading something about the wheels/tires needing to have enough clearance for snow chains or something so that the chains don't chew up the fenders.

Well if you actually think about it the fenders are really there to prevent water and road debris from coming up and so the fenders actually NEED to be larger than the wheels for that to happen. It may not look the way you want it to but it is designed that way for a reason. This flush fad will pass too as many others have before it.....

More rotational mass = slower acceleration/performance. Also you have to take into consideration that these are street cars. If you lower them, they will bottom out. And I'm not just talking about the bumper, I'm talking about the undercarriage too. I've cracked my oil pan on my xi.....yea the highest sitting 3 series. I can't imagine what the damage would have been if I was lowered.....then again I had 5 people in the car. |

Bimmer can put 19s on regular e90 but whats the point? just to fill up the gap and flush? also if theres no gap and flush means the car sits very low...
