DIY stories
So after nearly a year of squeaky brakes, after a lot of planning and preparation, I finally got down to taking off my tires and brakes, and sand the rotors.
Could have brought it to dealer, but I didn't really want anyone sitting inside my car, and I seriously didn't think they would give it back to me fixed the first time, I had enough of that for this lifetime. Equipment check: 12kg hydraulic Jack wheel chock (not really engage, but it looks cool as Jacky mentioned) push cart, got a really cool, high-end copy one of the Japanese style, bright blue.. (why do some of you know what this is??) electric impact wrench, stated ('China' figures) 340nm Jack stand, not used (for later oil change) hand tools: 17mm short/long 1/2drive 19mm shot/long 1/2drive 1/2 rachet (really splurge here, 43rmb -twice the price of the cheapest one!) H6 1/2drive (or 6mm Hex) 8mm 1/4d (just bought it cuz I spent hours fumbling around last time changing the rear lights -surprise- very useful this time to remove wheel well panels) 1/2d 37.5cm turn-y head thing (so tell me the name already..) 17mm/19mm 54cm breaker bar (didn't break s***) Won't go into the details, you can find it on the web. Result: squeak is gone! (have to take my word for it) I also put back on the OEM runflats that had been living happily upstairs with me () as I am going to attempt a DIY rim scratch fix later. I know its cheap getting it fixed by the pro tire+wheels boys, and they won't sit in the inside of the car, but at this stage, its become much easier and less costly time and effort wise, as I have already wasted so much time finding out how to do these things. Anyway, so I drove very very slowly around the carpark, to test the brakes and tires, before venturing outside. I could no reproduce the squeak even when I tried! Only time I heard anything, i was stuck on a speedbump, and i think it came from the back. Its all gone, but later will tell if it lasts. What had happened was when i changed to my new rims, on the way home i had to emergency brake on a downslope... very very punishing on the front brakes, there was a large groan/shreak from the front left, you could feel something tearing or coming apart. As it turns out, if it is indeed the case, what happened was the massive heat generated in such a short period of time, burnt the brake pad and fused it/with it onto the rotor, making them 'glazed'. Ever since then. the front brakes creaked and groaned from and to a full stop, especially on humid days and when cold starting, going away completely/nearly on warm up. So thanks to all those guys who posted DIYs ages ago, many not even BMW ones.. your help was what I relied on to get it all done myself. Next up, oil change. So i went to the dealer, the filter is 15x hkd -75% markup! Guess i was completely wrong about the 20%.. The two cabin air filters - 11xx! are you freakin kidding me? needless to say i didnt buy it, i don't want top breathe bad air, but that one, I'm sure you can do better than that in 30mins shipped. And they don't sell oil, so you can't 'replicate' the exact goods you are getting from them, though it is supposedly easy to buy oil in hk, just have to make sure the source can be trusted - any HK bros buy their own oil, gotta source pls let me know. |

Nice write up grimmy. Good to hear your finally have done it. And you have all the space which i don't have at where I live.
So they ripped you off at the stealership? Glad you told us. But I know I won't let them do too much there. I have an auto shop which I used for more than 10 years which specialize in european cars. Can't really DIY coz I'm lazy and no place to do. May be I can change the air filter myself. But seriously I'll change to K&N next time.

Wow, awesome and well done, bro
I admire your DIY, and of course your energy! But, again ask why you change oil yourself? You will get bmwhk do it for free, at least the first year?

is same as this filter: http://www.amazon.com/Mann-Filter-HU...0915236&sr=1-1 here are the ones for cabin air filter: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...+cabin&x=0&y=0 going to take the one out of the car, then match and see which one of these is it! .. should be perfect fit, its produced by Mann this one is 1/4-1/3 of the price Should be easy to replace the engine air filter yourself. think you need one torx screwdriver .. give it a go! |

Cuz i don't want them inside the car, and dont want them touching anything, in case a fault mysterious comes out, at which pt there is no avenue for redress and i have to But after will be better, once i know how to do everything, no more costs except materials, not cheap but around 1.5k-2k a yr But after this time, i am sick of DIY already and will probably not touch it again until i have to |

btw they changed from mobil 0w40 to shell 0w40 ..the mobil is 800 for 4l at the gas station, havent checked the shops yet, shell 5w40 is 670, they don't even have the 0w40. Don't know which is better, will check the price and see if they changed for price reasons..
mobile 15w40 is 1/4 the price of 0w40 at the station! now i am afraid what the outside mechanics have been putting in our cars all this time .. |
