Can VMR 701 wheels cause this brake squeal?
This sound occurs whenever the brakes get wet, either by washing the car or rain, which is all the time in Seattle. The dealer says it's the wheels. He says they chamfered the pads (which are practically new OEM), used anti-squeal, checked everything was clean and the sound was still there. They put stock wheels on and it's gone. He says he's absolutely positive it's from the wheels (19" VMR 701s) which are acting as a bell and amplifying the sound.
Does anyone else with VMR 701s have this problem? Feedback is really appreciated since I need to get this fixed and my warranty is up in 4 weeks. |

They make the exact same sound as in the video? I'm sure it's much less of a problem living in SoCal, but in Seattle it rains a lot. Every time I go somewhere and it's raining, SQUEEEEEEEAK when I stop. Yes it goes away after braking hard 4-5 times, but that means CONSTANTLY doing this in wet weather. It's fucking annoying and sounds ghetto.

Wow, that sucks. How the hell does a rim cause squeal?
Damn shame too, I have a jet black sedan and was looking at those EXACT wheels.. They look awesome - I like something different than the csl-style everyone seems to have these days - even though csl-style looks awesome too. are they the "stock" gunmetal wheels or a custom job? ...Since they are giving you so many problems, Ill take them cheap

It's the VMR gunmetal finish, which sucks. Chips like crazy. If I wasn't having such issues with these wheels I might powdercoat them someday cause I love the style.
Not getting any real answers as to this sound issue... |

I think you're not getting an answer because there doesn't seem to be a way for a wheel to cause that kind of brake squeal. If the shop wants to make that claim, they should throw on another set of wheels and drive it around.
But in my (uneducated) opinion, there's no way a wheel could make that kind of brake squeal. It's called brake squeal, and not wheel squeal, for a reason. |

That's a good point, and like I said it seems extremely improbable to me too. But the dealer claims it doesn't happen with stock wheels, I guess I have to test that for myself. What a PITA.

Does really see why the wheels themself should cause that noise.

We've sold tons of V701s and I've never heard of this issue, ever. Honestly that sounds like a brake related issue. You should try a different shop to inspect the brakes to see if they can figure out what's causing that unusual squealing.

I have heard about VMR's finish not being the best, but what would finish have to do with brake squeal? ... I like that style too, perhaps I'll try to track down some similiar wheels with a better finish...

wow just stumbled into this and wow... wheels making brakes squeak? no offense but thats almost the dumbest thing ive ever heard. I mean if in reality it is the wheels pleaseeeeee prove me wrong, but dam thats pretty far fetched. Anyways keep us updated and let us know whats up. but honestly just throw your oems on and see what happens if its still there then its probably something related to your brakes

No, I no longer have my stock wheels, otherwise I'd have tested this myself. I spoke with and did a ride along with the shop foreman at BMW Seattle and he's confident the sound is caused by the wheels. His explanation is there is always brake vibration happening and most sound is absorbed through the stock wheels. So the sound IS coming from the brakes, but shouldn't be that loud. However these wheels are acting like a bell and amplifying that sound. Big time. He says he's 100% confident that's the cause and the only solution is to change the wheels. Any E90posters in Seattle have a set of stock wheels they wanna let me borrow for a couple of days to test?? Seriously, please PM me if so.
The lugs are tight, yes. All rotors and pads have been inspected and cleaned at the dealer with no problems found. Pads were even replaced. Anti-squeal applied. Caliper bolts lubed. Sound is still there. AllBlackBimmer - I'm not saying the finish has anything to do with the sound, that's just a secondary issue with the VMRs. The styling is great but the finish chips extremely easily, I've never seen such poor quality paint on any other wheels I've owned. It's a "budget" wheel so I guess that's partially forgivable. Partially. |

Are your brakes tight? Maybe they are loose or pad is loose that is causing it to vibrate, thus causing that awful noise? Maybe your caliper is cracked or bent somehow?

"Acting like a bell" That's awesome. Kudos for creative bullshit.
Anyway, I had a similar problem. Similar sound. It was aftermarket pads though, ie completely different compound. You may want to re-bed your pads. They may have been glazed at some point. If that doesn't work, I'd push for new pads and ensure they use brake quiet and bed them in. Edit: just saw they were replaced. Did they bed in properly. If not, try it yourself. That may do the trick. |

DSBJ - I'm not familiar with bedding in. What's the process and what's the purpose? I checked my service notes from my first dealer visit to address this in June. They noted "found brake sensors are squeaking front and rear, replaced sensors and pads front and rear." Nothing about bedding in, although I assume that wouldn't be noted.
AllBlackBimmer - since everything was just checked at the dealer by a foreman, we can assume all parts and in tact, functioning properly and clean. I guess the only thing I can do is find a local person to lend me a set of stock wheels to test with. If the dealer is right and wheels are amplifying brake noise, mind = blown. If not, they're lying to avoid just replacing some brake components under warranty, I'd be almost as surprised. |

I can see how the honking would be irritating. I can also see how the wheels could make that noise when the rotors are rusted following rain, etc. Mine rust up quickly after a car wash and that increased vibration could make those thin spokes act like a tuning fork or amplify the harmonics from the brake.
