225/40/18 on 8.5 inch wheel
I have a 2008 328i sedan which currently is running stock 16" wheels. The tires are getting down in tread depth and I decided to upgrade both tires and wheels.
For Christmas, I asked my kids for 2 new front tires to go on the BMW staggered 189 style wheels I bought in November. The front 189 wheels are 8" width and the rears are the 8.5" width. So, I ended up with 3 new Continental 225/40/18 tires for the front. Thanks kids! Hmmm.... I haven't bought tires specifically for the rear wheels yet. I know the "normal" size for staggered set-up for the 8.5" rear wheels is 255/35/18. Will the "extra" 225/40/18 fit on an 8.5" wide wheel? Should I buy one more 225/40/18 for the rear or do I need to return ($35 in shipping cost) and move to the 255/35/18 size for the rear? Last edited by glider4; 12-28-2011 at 10:42 AM.. The 225's will be fairly stretched on an 8.5" wheel. I wouldn't go smaller than a 235 on an 8.5" width. 255's would be ideal as it's a factory size, but 245's would work also.

225s will be ever so slightly stretched. 235s IMO is the perfect size for an 8.5" rim. If you already have the tires and dont mind the traction loss then go for it.

225s will not be stretched on 8.5-inch rims.
Check out this link to see that 225/40/18 tires will fit rims up to 8.5 inches. Anything beyond 8.5 inch would be stretched. http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp Many people put 225/40s on OEM staggered wheels as their winter set, because the width in the rear is not that much wider. LMK what you decide.

A 225/40/18 will work perfectly fine on an 8.5" wide wheel. We sell this type of setup all the time for our Volkswagen customers. Here are some photos of various tires on one of our 8.5" VB3s.

Thanks for the help!
It sounds like the 225/40/18 would work just fine.
However, this morning I got a somewhat better rate from FedEx on shipping one of the 225/40/18s back to Phoenix ($27.50) so I decided to exchange that tire for a 255/35/18. The discount tire direct folks where my daughter bought that tire were pretty helpful about doing the exchange. I'll still need to get one more 255/35/18 Continental DWS for the rear before making the complete change out from my stock 16 inch setup. I'll probably do that in after the first of the year. I don't need a specific winter set of tires& wheels where I live so my next task will be to sell off all five of my current 16 inch 156 style wheels. I hope that should offset some of the cost of upgrading to the 189s! Thanks again everyone for the help! |
