European Delivery trip route ideas and discussions

I would love to hear some great route ideas for the ED trip. Especially some great scenic drives on high quality tarmac - I think Matthew EW had some ideas. I don't know many passes so it would be great if we can all share some advice to get the most out of our M5 European Delivery experience.

What scenic drives/passes should we explore?

My current plan is to do Grossglockner/Salzburg, Stelvio/Bormio/Davos
Silvretta/Lech am Arlberg, Garmisch Partenkirchen/Mittenwald, Kesselberg / Kochel am See
Started to map it on Google maps to get an idea how much I can really fit into 4-5 days

Also plan to visit Alpina, G-Power, M Studio along the way.

As a quick teaser I've created a map for Munich to Kochelsee, Garmisch , stop at Kloster Ettal (nice beergarden) near Garmisch, head to Starnberg (beautiful lake) and stop
at Seeshaupt (plenty of nice cafes/beer gardens) , head along the Starnberg lake and back on the highway to Munich.
All in all a ~160mls/4hr trip ... http://goo.gl/maps/D3Jv

A couple of options coming from Munich

Grossglockner (appr 2.5hrs from Munich/relatively close to Salzburg)
http://www.grossglockner.at/en/hochalpenstrasse/

Stelvio Pass (appr 3.5/4hrs from Munich / 1.5hrs from Innsbruck)
http://www.bormio3.com/stelvio-pass/
http://www.ultimatedrives.net/routes...route_ID=30003

Silvretta Pass (appr 3hrs from Munich/1.5hrs from Davos)
http://www.galtuer.com/silvretta-pas...ne-road.en.htm
http://www.ultimatedrives.net/routes...route_ID=40010

and very close to Munich (less than an hour) is
Kesselberg (Kochel am See) which is a great driving road.
Something you can even do the same day after delivery
http://www.bestbikingroads.com/motor...am-_67779.html

A few more suggestions/options
http://www.ultimatedrives.net/routes/index.php

When you are finishing up near the lake, you will be so close to Andechs that you might as well go see the monks for a litre. Although I plan to do all my drinking via tvv prior to delivery.

I will be heading south from Munich to Northern Italy through some major and minor passes -- major passes such as Glossglockner, Gotthard, San Bernadino, and Stelvio Passes.

Thanks to the brilliant idea from jmh, I have changed my original route which was long and went to Genoa and Monaco.

Now I have less driving, more passes, and more sightseeing which should please my family.

Vacation agenda:
9/14-9/15: Westin Grand Munich (Factory Tour, M5 delivery at Welt)
9/15-9/17:*Sheraton Fuschlsee-Salzburg *Lake Resort (Drve there via Grossglockener, Visit Salzburg, Berchtesgaden, boat ride to Konigsee, jennerbahn to summit)
9/17-9/18: Sheraton Davos (Drive Stelvio Pass to Davos) just spend night in Davos and leave in AM for Zurich via Silvretta Pass.
9/18-9/20: Park Hyatt*Zurich: tour Zurich and also visit Basle and Berne
9/20-21: Le Meridien Stuttgart (visit Hohenzollern Castle)
9/21-9/23: Westin Grand Munich (arrive morning of 21st - visit Dingolfing Factory) *Do checkin at Loginout Saturday AM. *See Castle Neuschwanstein Saturday PM, fly out 9/23)

I am debating cutting out the Davos Stelvio piece since that's an entire day, and instead doing 2 days in Stuttgart and going to Nurburgring.

What do you guys think?

Anyone else have any great route ideas/itineraries to share?

I think BarryB and I are going to go to Southern Germany on Saturday then head back to Munich, on Sunday go to the Nurburgring, stay the night up there. I am back to Munich on Monday since I have to drop my car off at 4pm. We fly out on Tuesday.

I think we're doing the following for a quick trip:

8/31 arrive and do Welt tour, hang out in Munich (probably do the Hofbrauhaus Munchen)
9/1 pick up, drive to Dachau (concentration camp memorial), then drive to Hohenschwangau (castles, lakes, museums, hikes)
9/2 quick drive through a little of Austria, then drive to The Eagles Nest (Bergtesgaden), then drive back to Munich
9/3 drop off and fly back

Short trip, but hopefully some good drives, cool sites, and great beer!

On day of arrival, I would suggest booking the Dingolfing Plant tour. It is very interesting since it is the plant where the M5 is built and is one of the most technologically advanced plants in the world. You can then do the Welt and Museum late afternoon when you get back. Dingolfing is about 45mins from Munich so you would need a car service or better yet - just borrow something interesting like a 1M or M3 Cabrio from BMW-On-Demand. for a few hours.

On my first ED I left Munich and drove all the way to Monaco. I was utterly exhausted when I arrived. This time I am doing less driving and more relaxing.
IMO, you did the right thing by cutting it out.

I think your drives are very long highway miles. I would recommend shorter distances and go for the twisties in the mountains. Some very nice Alpine passes. You can't go Autobahn speeds, but they really bring out the enjoyment of a BMW M.

Very good point. We are now looking at a southern route possibly through the Stelvio pass. We need 4 fun places to stay over on a southern route that lands us back in Munich Friday. Hmmm. Since this is a Mancation and we are leaving the women at home we don't want to hang out in romantic towns with nothing going on. Any cool obvious places to stay on the southern fun driving loop?

If I may interject, a browse through some of our homepage features on European Delivery trips may help with some of your plans and routes.

One thing any first time ED-er should keep in mind is driving over here is very exhausting mentally. IF you are use to driving say 200 miles in on day in the states... plan on trips of 200 ~ 300 kms or so. Think of 1 Km = 1 mile (even though its not! 1 km = 0.6 miles) but driving over here is really hard on your body and mind.

Plus you have a new car and its best to stick to the back (Bundesstrasse) roads (100 kph) and take it easy for the first few days. Don't exceed 170 kph and your diff will thank you later.

Porsche has put together some nice scenic drives for their ED customers.

Porsche’s Tips for ED driving tours of Germany…
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...=porsche+tours

You can also check out my ED museum & 1addicts @Stelvio threads below on my signature. My other tip would be travel anywhere South of Munich and you will have a blast! Italy is only a little bit over an hour away. Austria and Switzerland also very close by.

Is anybody following the trip packages suggested by BMW?
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...eOverview.aspx

This Oct is my first ED and since I am not too familiar with Germany, I am thinking picking one of the 5 days trips. Has anyone done it and any advise?
