10W30

Was wondering if I can use this oil on and off with the recommended 5W30.
I inadvertantly reversed these grades in a post last week.
What do you think/

Shouldn't be a big issue but it should be LL01 approved oil. That is the key.

What's LL01. Seems dumb to have to ask.

The following is the only recommended and approved synthetic oil for BMW M
(Motorsport) vehicles in the US market with gasoline engines, at the present time.
BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Synthetic Oils for BMW M vehicles
equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines
Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil, or
Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil
(BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420)

So, what correct viscosity should be followed? I would go with what the manual says as that pdf may be obsolete.

Do the F10 m5 manual ...

All the (North American) bmw dealers are using the 5w30.

I work at a BMW service center and also have an f12 m6. I know for a fact that 5w-30 is the recommend oil for the tri-state area.

Oil Spec...

Here in New Zealand the spec for F10 M5 is Castrol Edge BMW LL01 5-30w. Trust this helps.

Cheers

Just had my 1st service today. Dealer insisted that correct spec is 10W-60, & that's what they filled into my engine (Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60), no matter what I said.

Not sure what i should do now ? What harm will it do to the engine if keeping it running with 10W-60?

Did you check the manual that came with your M5 MY? For my 2013 M5, the manual that came with it on page 177, it recommends engine oil viscosity grades SAE 0W-30 or SAE 0W-40 and alternatively SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40.

If I were you, better drain that oil and do it yourself (buy the oil yourself) right away. 10w60 is for N.A V8 ... hopefully, no long term issue down the road.

If it's their mistake, they should replace the oil for me, but the problem is, I have to prove them wrong first. Is there any official document (other than the oil recommended list) to support this?

Yes, I know. It says so in the printed manual as well as the on-board digital one. I actually showed it to the BMW people, but they still said it's 10-60W from their internal record.

Any other member in HK can share what engine oil you have for your F10 M5 & whether BMW changed the differential fluid during 2000 km service (mine not changed) ?

Your dealer SUCKS BALLZ!!!

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

After all the hassles, the dealer finally got back to me, saying the correct oil spec for F10 M5 in the region should be 0W-40. They will drain the 10W-60 & refill with 0W-40 for free.

Yes, they suck big time. It's just ridiculous for the dealer to have an owner tell them what the correct oil spec should be.

Thanks to you guys & the forum for the extensive info sharing.

for the 2000km first service, your dealer is required to change to rear diff fluid as well. (If you have a manul tranny, then it is also to be changed)

Another major screw up ! you better bring this up with the GM of the dealership of how incompetent the service people are.
