1st Test of Traction & Acceleration / F10 M5 vs Camaro SS
My first stoplight battle happened around midnight last night. I ran a late model (~new) black SS Camaro. We both got a decent launch and reaction time. He got a slight jump through 1st gear and put a fender on me when he hit 2nd. Then my M5 found some traction and I pulled right past him. By the end of 2nd gear I was slightly ahead and in 3rd I walked away. Camaro driver was cool and game me props. He was very surprised! Good fun..

I'm always beating up on camaros and mustangs. They never give up and keep testing the M5. I always crush those kids with my seat fans on and butt massager on as well.

Not just kids.... Moved from Orange County to Houston and I've never had more adults try and race me in my life... Lets just say there's lots of American pride here.... And they love their muscle cars. I just laugh ans point.

These M's are a true sleeper. Raced an older guy in a Ferrari California the other day and completely blew his doors off. The guy was shocked and pulled over to ask me what mods i had, popped the hood and show'd him it was all stock inside. The guy was rather disappointed but I was like

guys you're acting like this is something to be proud of.
you're up 130 hp on the stupid camaro! you should have been pulling right from the start. if anything , the fact that you weren't, is a fail for the m5 imo. unless of course you can attribute it to you're driving skill. |

The guy that raced me looked to be mid 30s and so was his seat cover. He pulled up to me. I didn't pick the fight. In the end on that day I had the quicker car. ...and like I said, he was cool about it. No whining about poor traction or excuses about being down on power or spent less money. He gave me the thumbs up and said I have a nice car. I said " thank you, so do you". No muss no fuss. As it should be, win or lose. I give props to the guy for stepping up and running what he has and not whining about the outcome.
@mainly: I suspect the M5 is up more than 130 hp but who knows. On a well prepped drag strip I can see your point. However, on the street there is much more variability in available traction which is the name of the game in 1st gear. Have you tried getting 4,300lbs moving quickly on Midwest asphalt? If so then you know you can't use all the horsepower the car makes. Thus no advantage off the line for horsepower. I believe the Camaro weighs in at ~3,900lbs so advantage Camaro there. And by advantage I mean given equal traction, simple math says the Camaro should be able to get the jump on an M5 in 1st gear. Regardless, It's all about traction and power to weight. In this case 1st gear was a relative dead heat. In 2nd I was putting car lengths on him and 3rd I was just driving off. As you so eloquently pointed out, as it should be given the horsepower advantage for the M5. I hope this helps you when forming your opinions. |

I have way more problems with pickup truck & mini-van drivers, I am serious, they all think they have 1000hp+ regardless of their ages.
