We'll start seeing more stuff in about 2 to 3 years about the next M5. The next generation 5-Series should be out in 2016 as a 2017 model year. So only a couple of more years away.
What they can do, is to use hybrid power in connection with the S63 (or any other S engine).

BMW M division has a 172g/km average fleet CO2 target they need to reach here in Europe. The S55 has it's lowest CO2 in the DCT version with 199g/km.

So, either M has to come up with more low emission vehicles (like the upcoming M2) to lower their fleet average down to 172 (to make up for the big polluters like the M5/6 etc). Or they have to start using hybrid powertrains in the same way we see in the McLaren P1 etc.

Time will show
Wait, so they calculate a fleet average for BMW and another one for the M division? I'm a little confused here :/

Do we even know that it's officially going to be called the G80 M5 yet? The next 5-Series is in fact going to be the G30, but that's all we know right now, I think.

It's going to be G30 M5. Not sure where G80 came from - guessing it was a typo at some point around here.

Amen.

You state this as a fact. What is the basis for this?

AWD should be a choice. Where I live AWD isn't needed all year. Plus RWD is fun!

Well well if this materializes you will get a super package! If they shed about 170-315 plus AWD, this could be GTR performance in a family sedan for dads and granddads! If the M5 ever became a coupe man ol man.

Well, to be honest i really don't understand BMW's policy. They try to kill themselves by announcing these things. Are they serious? No, the only thing that missing is to see an M3/M4 4WD......

WTF BMW?? Wake up....!!

I am shocked how many people want and AWD M car... are you guys serious?! Why do you want the extra weight, more understeer, and less drifting fun? I mean if you're that "old", why not just go for an AMG? Or do you really just want a better 0-60 time or live in an area where you can't drive your M5 during the winter cause it only has RWD?

I wouldn't be so sure. Where is the option for the non-turbo F10? It was not so long ago that the M division swore there would never be a turbo M - not to mention M SUVs.

Winters in TN are not bad at all and yet I would have preferred an AWD M5. Increased handling and improved traction seems like a nice option. I decided against the AMG because I preferred the transmission and styling of the M5.

I have only had 1 other AWD car and i thought the handling was incredible.

All very exciting, sounds like it'll be an incredible family super saloon, but it still pretty portly at 1850kg.

Any danger of all this carbon technology and 600 plus horsepower going into something mid engined and 400kg lighter in 2016?

Interesting. For me it is a big decrease in handling because I like to move the car at the limit here and there and understeer is the worst thing to have I think. I remember when I was on the racetrack with the R8 V10, I mean it was fast, but only while driving it at like 85-90%. Once you really pushed it, it was pretty terrible with all that understeer. Not that enjoyable to me. And since BMW M is for purists I just believe in that RWD, best dynamics kind of philosophy.

I mean I am pretty sure if they offer AWD, it will be an option, which seems okay. However, I'd be pissed if I meet another M5 on the street that kicks my ass on a little acceleration run lol.

I just feel that all the companies are losing their uniqueness and are all moving towards being the same thing. BMW M got more comfortable and AMG got a little sportier and more Dynamic and Audi is filling that little gap inbetween. They all lost their characters a bit

Anyways... Enough trolling lol.

Thanks for your pov though. I really was looking for a serious answer.

The current M5/M6 engine is bespoke enough to me while it produces up to 180hp more (reliable horsepower) than any other V8 twin-turbo BMW. I wouldn't want BMW to mess around with engines just to be different.
