100k miles on a 2013 M5. Stay away?
Hi. I'm currently driving an E92 M3 and looking to move to an F10 M5. Due to budget, I'm looking at 2013s. I only drive about 5k a year. I'm seeing a lot of cars in the low $30s range with differences in prices being driven by mileage much more than by equipment.
Without having seen them, I'm finding a good number of cars that look great that have between 90-100k miles. Are these cars just getting broken in at 100k or is that the edge of the danger zone and should be avoided? I am asking for maintenance records and usable life of tires and brakes. I would also have a PPI done. But I have no experience with this platform in terms of what might be lurking under the surface. Many thanks for sharing your experiences.

I migrated to the F10 M5 platform but kept my E92 as its all sorted to perfection. I would highly recommend getting a car with history, miles actually help these M cars stay in shape if you ask me. These cars don't seem to have the same grenades on E9x Ms. I bough my car from local BMW dealer and was able to negotiate a great deal with extended warranty. Car has 70K miles and its a simply amazing.
PS. NEVER BUY A GERMAN CAR WITHOUT EXT. WARRANTY. My E92 cost the warranty company well over its sticker price of $72K in repairs. GL and keep us posted.

I'm finding lots of indy dealers that apparently don't check the VIN when putting together the ad for their cars. I've seen three competitions that weren't, and adding Executive and Driver's assist is par for the course, regardless of whether or not the car has the options. I'm looking for fresh brakes and tires. The warranty will cover the rest. I'll be back.

Hoping I don't jinx myself, but I agree on the F10 M5 build quality and finding one with good records. Mine was meticulously maintained at a dealer, had the turbo lines replaced under warranty along with injectors. The latter is now covered for 10 years I believe by BMW. I know these are some of the 'weaker' spots for these cars, so I was happy to see that it was done. I have 57k miles and the car is great. If I had to pick though, i'd still choose my E60 6MT, but with rod bearings, throttle actuators and the like, they're just too problematic. Its a shame as that S85 is a masterpiece.
BTW, I do not have a warranty on my F10. |

I would have a good look a the history, number of owners, the condition of the car and is it being sold by a BMW dealer? The miles are high but if the car has been cared for it's nothing to be scared of.

I would say as far as spec, the only possible deal breaker would be no 'Executive Package'. it adds a lot of nice features. Good news for you is when I was searching, 9 out of 10 M5's had it. Mine also has B&O which while maybe not worth the money, looks great contrasted against the door cards.

It just came with it, could have done without it, though it does 'look' markedly better than the drab, black HK system. Plus the pop up tweeter in the center dash is pretty trick.

The exec package which I admit mine has consists of 343M's 20'',black tint rear half windows, comfort active seats (best seats on the planet) speed limit display? equaliser hi fi with s/disc,rear camera, not sure about the headlamps they seem to swing round corners and dip to oncoming traffic, think thats it but could be wrong and the worthwhile option of split/fold rear seats.NV and lane change buzzer I do not have as like you I tend to do low miles with the odd trips to the coast at weekends.

Not necessarily "on a budget," but I have a price point that's affordable.
