What is F10 M5 repair cost per year

Hi Everyone

I'm an e90 328i user. And I'm trying to buy a F10 M5. I heard M5's V8 put the turbo between the V location and this cause massive heat there. And this made the car not that reliable, issue like turbo gasket leak, water pump, battery dies and so on. But also I heard BMW did some tech upgrade on his n63 engine (for 550i) in 2014.Not sure about S63 engine. So can anyone tell me how does BMW fix those issues? Also how much repair fee that you spend on your M5 pre year.

I haven’t put that many miles on mine but own it for 3 years now and haven’t had a single issue with anything other than like generic maintenance.. spark plugs, coils... oil change every 3k miles, just maintain it more than a regular car and you’ll be fine! it’s an awesome car that you will definitely love if you put love into it ! good luck !!

I've now owned my 2012 M5 for 4 years and gone from 24000 to 60000 miles. Over that time it has cost me £4400 in maintenance. That comprises of main dealer services/MOT's, 4 new Michelin PS4S tyres, plugs, coils packs, front and rear brake pads, 2 comfort access door handles and the AC Condenser.

It's never broken down, the worst problem was a slight full throttle misfire which was cured with new coil packs.

By far the highest cost is depreciation, which I'd estimate at about £15000 over these 4 years (obviously far more if you buy newer, mine was just over 3 years old when I got it). Also the fuel cost was high at about £8600.

All in all, a brilliant car if properly maintained and treated with a degree of mechanical sympathy such as letting it warm up before using more than 50% throttle. The problem with buying these cars second hand is knowing how they have been treated. It's a complete lottery, even a pristine main dealer car could have been thrashed and you'd never know.

I've no plans to replace it. I've considered the F90 M5 but I actually prefer the looks of the F10 and I just couldn't justify the cost to change.

You clearly watched that video from that one moron on Youtube and took all of his absolute ignorance as fact.

These cars are outstandingly reliable all things considered. Far less maintenance hungry than the non-m counterparts. Since the engine runs so much cooler with regards to oil and coolant temps it doesn't nuke gaskets/seats/hoses either.

Tires & brakes are going to be your 2 largest expenses. A good set of tires is going to run you $2k, front brakes about $2k, rear brakes about $1500, etc. This is a big boy car with big boy upkeep costs. I've chewed through front & rear brakes and 1 set of rear tires in 25,000 miles of daily driving tuned at ~800hp.

My 2014 still has its original battery at 84k....

Find out if it's a oil gulper or sipper. Bought my '14 comp and it has used 2 quarts in 4000miles. All depends on how it was broken in and ran early on. Not sure if the oil use is blow by or vapors re-ingested and burned (lowers effective octane and spark advance), but it's a beast. I'm pretty sure mine still has a tune left in it. Now way it doesn't, the way it pulls to and through the 160's.....somewhere in mehico of course 😏

Not big from my side in fact reasonable costs for this big machine,a mature driver will benefit from component longevity. With any high performance car if you 'drive it like you stole it' a lot then brakes, tyres and other things will sting you.Have had my '13 since Mar '17 and mechanically it's been oil and brake fluid changes only with tyres being swapped out not really completely worn out but wanted better grippier replacements.
*I was lucky I got two new front Pilots,265's online cost £310 inc.del, took them to my tyre fitter who fitted both at £35 with everything in.

Maybe $400 so far for 8 months for me; here's what I've done so far

Oil change (diy)
Diff fluid flush
Brake fluid flush

Not outrageous by any means so far; but then again, it's a '15 w/ only 50k-ish miles. I'd expect to do coils and plugs soon, likely to the tune of $4-500 as a diy.

*edit* forgot 4 new MPS4s to the tune of $1700 for all 4 mounted+balanced.

So yea, $2100 so far lol.

Will likely need front rotos/pads soon; that's like $1500 as a DIY.

I would say the most common issue are leaks of oil and coolant lines that is endemic for all turbo cars. However, for the S63 powertrain, BMW designed a very complicated cooling system with many feet of hoses/lines. The water-cooled intercooler itself adds a complex set of coolant lines.

Each fix will cost around $1k at the dealer, about half that if done at an indy shop. My M6 (also with a S63B44T0) has had two major repairs for coolant leaks already, luckily all under warranty.

Other than that, as others said, maintenance is your largest expense. Budget about $1000 per year for a combo of maintenance and repair. You pay to play!

Glad someone else felt that way about that video...goes to show how little time these YouTube reviewers spend with the cars they're making a video on. Ridiculous.

I've had the exact same experience with mine. It has not consumed any oil between changes. Proper warm up before high revs are essential in addition to regularly scheduled oil changes.
