According to top gear the E60 M5's differential exploded, and something went wrong with the traction control.

BMW can easily fix that. Just add another speaker and soundtrack to the exterior.

On a serious note, although I do like the M5, it should not hit limp mode so easily. On a M, it's inexcusable.

i hope you are wrong but that is exactly why i got rid of the 335 and upgraded to an M3. to avoid that whole fuel pump excuse thing on the 335 twin turbo and go with the natural aspirated V8. and the M3 is a dream. cant ever buy that M5 until i dont hear of any complaints of limp mode ever. i am dissapointed in this video.

Actually, some reviews said this ///M5 was more like the e39 than the e60 in character and attitude.......and I think the same thing can be said for the looks. I was on the highway the other day and a beautiful grestone e39 ///M5 merged in and pulled up next to me, and he gave me the thumbs up......I just waived and made the sign with my hands. That car is just so damn clean, sexy and badass....a decade later. But other than the quad pipes, bit of fender flare, slightly different fornt end and different side mirrors the car looks like a regular 5.. I think that is the look BMW has returned to, a more classy look. Which makes sense because this car is bought by many as an executive sedan----that they can be a kid in when no one is looking

Cheers,
e46e92

If you are unhappy about ...limp mode... ask yourself this question, if you were BMW would you have given the M5 360kw instead of 410kw *just* so it could do an extra few laps in a hot climate?

Engineering is the ultimate compromise, everything that makes the M5 great, fuel efficiency, effortless power & smooth delivery, low drag coefficient... And the only thing you guys want is a track day toy... Tut Tut.

It would have been as simple as increasing the capacity of the cooling system. Assuming that was the cause of the limp mode, but I think it's a safe bet that it was related to heat. It seems all modern BMWs have issues with heat on the track, E9x M3's brakes get hot VERY fast, N54s overheat and go into limp mode pretty quickly. I don't know how much better newer N54s with the oil coolers do, but I took my N55 135i (which has the oil cooler) to the track with JB3 set to 14psi and it didn't give me any issues. I could feel it lose power a bit as the IATs climbed, but I never got limp mode even though we were near Palm Desert in roughly 100 degree weather.

Anyone who expects a stock car to be track worthy is kidding themselves. You can take most modern sports cars to the track and have fun driving at 8/10ths or 9/10ths for a few laps if you use common sense. You'll have to pit every 3-4 laps to let your tires, brakes, etc. cool off otherwise you're going to wear through them insanely quickly, but if you think ANY car can go straight from the showroom and lay down 10 or more laps at 10/10ths pace, you're simply wrong.

The only exceptions to this, as far as I know, are the 911 GT2 and GT3 (and RS models) and the C6 Z06 and probably the ZR-1, too but even these cars do well with a few minor mods like track specific brake pads.

Must be me but the asthetics of the Merc look like garbage. More like an elongated egg than a sports car. Exhaust sounds great but definitely does not match the look in ferocity.

Its mostly the rear of the car that just turns me off. That slope looks just like an old Ford Taurus more than a 100k sports car.

My neighbor bought a CLS550 last month. It is AMAZING in person. I have thoughts about sneaking over there at night and having sex with the car.

agreed. would you/others mind posting your thoughts/examples on some of the older vehicles that you would think would qualify to do this?

Lotus?
C5 z06?
Viper? (trying to think outside the box, maybe the ACR)
any of the RS vehicles from Audi?
WRX/Evo?
e36 m3?
e46 m3?

I have to agree. I expect more. My question would be, did the 1M go into Limp mode?

In general I agree with your comments Remonster. Its worth noting though that your 135 has a air-to-air intercooler, whereas the M5 has an air-to-water intercooler. I have some experience with charge coolers and while they are wonderfully compact and efficient for everyday use, but they are serious underachievers on the track.

Whatever the cause of the problem I fear the solution (if implemented) would take something away from what makes the M5 so good, for example adding a larger oil cooler would increase aerodynamic drag and increasing the cooling capacity would just delay the problem temporarily. Using air-to-air intercoolers would increase turbo lag too because of the increased volume of charge air. Eugene said "delete the limp mode", that could be catastrophic.

BMW's engineers obviously had their reasons for using air-to-water charge coolers instead of intercoolers, and if thats the price you pay for those incredible engine characteristics, 99% of us would pay it happily given the alternatives.

The limp mode comment is concerning. I doubt I will ever take this car on ye track. But I like solid positive reviews.
