Not surprising. Higher revs, linear power delivery, torque vectoring AWD, and its ability to run a few laps without overheating are probably the main reasons.

That ZL1 is incredible though. Now if only the build quality wasn't garbage.

This is just getting old.

BMW continues to harvest it's driving focused reputation while releasing products that are slower and softer; with the goal not of producing the Ultimate Driving Machine, but of capturing market share by appealing to the middle/average consumer.

It results in a short term sales boost, until your reputation falters and people realize you're the new Toyota.

F30 335i 3 SECONDS slower than the E90 gen.
F30 335i just 0.7sec ahead of the Hyundai Genesis?
M5 & M6 get smoked by a Chevy, the SS 1LE, much less the ZL1? (Congrats to the Bow Tie crowd btw, wow!)
M5 now the HEAVIEST of the competition (C63 & S6-and it's AWD!!)!!?

It's sad to watch this company try to win the race to average.

Fair point, but I still would take an M5 over an S6. Now to get the RS6 in America...

Understandable on a smaller/mid sized racetrack where size/agility can make up for slower straight line performance. What's even crazier is that the F10 M5 SportAuto Nurburgring time equalled the M3's (at 8:05) despite the M5 having better tires (PSS vs PS2) and a DCT (the M3 was a manual) and that would be the type of track totally favoring the M5. M3 comp pack + DCT + PSS likely would have rendered the E9x a tad faster around the 'ring.

With 35-40 hp more and 150 lbs in weight savings vs E9x, the F80 M3 may break the 3 min barrier. Lower weight will be huge (just as we're seeing the disadvantages from higher weight with the M5).

Yeah, seriously, how do you build an M5 heavier than an S6, which has AWD? Engines are almost identical in size, M5 4.4L TT V8, S6 4.0L TT V8, so you can't put the blame there. It's just fat, pure and simple.
