Got this done on mine today, the driver's side is SUPER hard to get on / off. While putting it back on, I messed up and ripped the air filter a bit (corner).
Should be good though, it's the part that is being pressed on near screw #7, and I super glued it back on. As for any gains, I think it's very very minimal (less then 5 HP I'd say..). It does sound SLIGHTLY louder, but to tell you really have to have Active Sound Disabled. |

I took the filters out yesterday, and as others have mentioned there is not a huge difference in performance but the engine does seems to breath a little easier. Throttle response may be slightly improved.
It is a very easy procedure, except for screw #7 on the driver's side. The job took me almost 2 hours for the entire job, more than an hour of that was on spent on this one screw. As a result, I have a few additions/changes to OPs instructions: 1. Work on screw #7 first. If you figure out you don't have the tools to get to it, at least you will not have wasted time taking the other 6 screws out. #7 is a real PITA!!!! 2. I also disconnected a few other things to improve access to screw #7. The hose that runs along side the airbox that the OP referred to in step 1 connects to a unit mounted on the other side of the intake pipe from the airbox. I removed the two screws circled in red, which provide a little more slack in the hose to push it out of the way of screw #7. I also removed the air flow meter by removing the two screws circled in green to create more room to work on screw #7.

Long drive today. Turbo intake noise seems louder with charcoal filter delete. Especially with windows down. I think it sounds cool

Had my local tech do it in less than 15 minutes. He has special flex sockets that bend making the one tough bolt easy to access.
As for the power or perceived power.... maybe its placebo but I ran a saleen mustang to 150mph for about 20 minutes (up and down the speed spectrum) and crushed up and the car felt and sounded better. Again it could be my mental desire to justify the mod but the car felt great!!! Thanks for posting this. Edit: My exhaust does sound louder too (E-Race)

I just removed mine as well and can confirm a slightly louder intake sucking sound under certain load conditions. I personally enjoy it!
Also, no snorkel or metal plate for me, just a hole. |

Good feedback from everyone. Yeah, the driver's bolt can be tricky, but you shouldn't have to take out the airflow sensor. If you do, be very careful...there were folks who fouled up their E60s when doing this. Better to just run over to the local tool store and get an articulating extension (good info @vic55) or make a tool that fits under the intake tube (mini ratchet, 1/4" T25 bit, and a 1/4" socket, bit taped into the socket). Took me about 20 min total time.

Just got around to pulling the charcoal filters out tonight. All around easy job assuming you have the proper tools. My car has the blocked off plates (Sept 12' build). I took a picture of the plate with the part number for those of you who were wondering. I'll test out the car on the way to the office tomorrow!

I'd say I've noticed a slight, barely noticeable difference in power but the sounds are what I've noticed the most. I hear more awesomeness coming from the exhaust now than I did before. If the charcoal delete and BMC combination woke up anything, I'd say it's the exhaust moreso than any noticeable power. I think my Meisterschaft came alive just a little more. All good. Well worth the time and money.

Thanks for this post.. I'm pulling the charcoal filters today.
What about replacing the stock paper filter? I hear BMWs do not like the "oiled"type of performance filters. What's the right (will not harm engine/sensors nor void warranty) and best (performance) filters for the 13 M5? Where do you get the recommended filters? Does M offer a performance filter? Thanks! |

Does anyone in Miami know how to do this?
I attempted but couldn't do screw #7 so gave up. Perhaps someone can volunteer to help me in exchange for coding!

With a daily driver which hopefully most M5's are right??? It is best to keep a regular paper air filter around to be installed while servicing the oiled filter. This gives you enough time to properly clean, dry and absorbs new oil into the filter media. |

Well, finally pulled the carbon filter about 3 hours ago. Took some smaller hands (thanks to the wife) to pull screw #7 but did finally get it.
Took it for a spin and I definitely agree on the responsiveness being better. I can especially tell it when the engine is still cold and you are pulling out. It always felt a bit sluggish at that time, but now it feels much better. The slight increase in intake sound is pleasant and not annoying. Filter thickness and material looks like something that would be in my cat's water fountain to filter out water. Too thick to see window light and a direct hit from a flash light only result in 'light spot'. Thank you California for extending your over regulation onto us... Just to contribute: I have the block off plates in the airboxes and I had a production start date of September 12. Last edited by johntomferg; 02-17-2013 at 05:07 PM.. |

Makes sense regarding proper oiling and absorption time with oiled filters. Are there performance filters that are not the oiled type? I understand BMC filters are oiled cotton. Are they better than the typical K&N type of oiled filter? Thanks!
