Post Run-in Oil Usage
Gents,
What are your average oil usage per 1000kms that you are getting on the F10 M5s? I have a mate that's using 1.5 litres per 1000 and BMW are saying that that is within tolerances!

I have about 5500ks on the car and I added 1L before the run in service at 2000ks. I added another 1L about 1000ks ago.
Your mate's car sounds like it is using too much .... |

I burn 1L every 600km. Apparently this is still within BMW tolerances and I should expect the oil consumption to go down. I was told not to expect any significant until at least > 10,000km.

I'm the same as you, I burned through 1 quart at 500 Miles and was told it was normal.

Are you looking at the first oil status screen which say's "oil level ok" or are going going through the full blown check that takes a couple of minutes with the engine warm at idle?

I'm at 6235 miles and have used a quarter of a quart. So at this rate I wouldn't need to add a quart till 25,000 miles.

I always allow engine to reach operating temperature before revving above 4k rpm. I never have used launch control. Other than that, I do push the car and am a performance oriented driver. I normally drive with engine in Sport+ transmission in either D2, D3 or S3, Full DSC, suspension in sport and steering in sport+. I do go full throttle whenever I can subject to warm up routine. I would call myself a bold driver. I am an M School grad after all! I do think that driving style and care may have something to do with this though. This is my second twin turbo V8 BMW. I also had a 2012 550i. I never had any oil loss in that one either.

thanks stealth
that makes a lot of sense. thats the reason why i did not consider a used or demo M5. i personally feel this oil usage has a lot to do with how the car was run in. why would you have to do a run in service on an m car, but not a 550 for example? |

I don't understand why these models have different run in routines other than the differential is different. I did a run-in service at my own cost on my 550i.

I did my break in exactly according to BMW requirements on my 2011 550i and that thing drank oil to the tune of about 1qt/2000miles. Have a local who has the same car and he pushed the hell out of his right out of the gate and it never drank a drop. I think it has more to do with build tolerances etc than break in. BTW at about 20k my car stopped requiring oil and now at almost 40k I cant recall the last time I had to add oil in between changes(which I do every 7.5k) so I think its a matter of it getting fully run in. I will run it in hard on my next car as I am around several race car builds and that is always the way it is done to seat rings properly.
Also I did change the oil right when I got the car back from ED @3k miles. |

Here in Canada/USA we can not even using 1/5th of the M5's potential. I laugh in the owners manual where it says to increase speeds to 250km/h for passing briefly after 2000km/1200mi. Where I live at least the fastest highway is 110km/h and after 40km/h over that you have a mandatory court appearance. In Germany people are doing 180km/h right out of the gate. Just some food for thought. I never hesitated to goose it now and then during the break in and have only had one top-up half quart top up at 800km, now at 8000km and still no call for extra oil. |

Had my first warning to add a quart in 125 miles, I was at 6750 miles, only other change/add of oil was at the 1200 mile service (which happened at 1204 miles). Of course this happens 400 miles from home on the weekend, so picked up some of the Castrol at auto parts store.
Here is where the PSA comes in, although most folks may be aware or wary of dealership servicing. Stopped by the my local BMW dealership to see if I could pick up a quart to stick in the trunk. Told him it was a 2013 M5. Guy comes out and said here ya go, all M's are notorious for burning some oil and hands me the gold Castrol 10w-60 bottle. I then tell him that isn't the correct stuff, that the even the manual calls for 0w-30, 0w-40 acceptable alternative being 5w-30 or 5w-40. He then proceeds to tell me that all M's for all of time have used the 10w-60, to which I stated that may be true, but that isn't the case for the 2013 M5. I then asked if the 10w-60 was what they used for servicing the F10 M5's, to which he said, yep, sure do. At that point I told him Thank God you didn't do the break in service on mine, and won't be doing future servicing of it. After a few more banters back and forth, he then tells me to hang on a minute and went to the back to double check. After about 5 maybe 10 minutes he reappears with a bottle of the BMW 5w-30 and is apologizing quite heavily, stating that everyone learns something new everyday. To which I replied, I hope you guys take care of any M's that required something different than the 10w-60. He stated that he would personally be going back through the service records to see what was done. So long story short, if you aren't confident or don't know your Service Advisor, ask what oil they will be using and if it were me ask again and see the note on the service order for the right stuff. Sorry for the long winded post. Was just shocked that he was so confident that he was in the right. |
