Trunk space?
Gents:
Search isn't helping me, and I have no BMW dealership in my town. I am trying to get a good estimate on how much I can fit in the M5 trunk for my upcoming ED. I am going to have 4 adults and was figuring I would be fine w/ 4 rollerboard carry-ons and 4 smaller backpack/purse sized bags. I can fit about as much in my wifes 3 series now. But if what I am reading is correct, the F10 actually has a smaller trunk than the F30 (only 14 cu/ft vs. 17 cu/ft). Any help from prior EDs or roadtrippers would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you can test fit the actual bags you plan to take in an F10 model, I would not chance it. I'm doing this completely from memory at work, but I'm not sure 4 suit cases will fit. If you cannot test fit I would use soft-sided bags or go with 2 suit cases and two soft side or garment bags to make sure you can position everything to fit the trunk space.

For example, the standard carry on size max for Delta is posted here: http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_.../carry-on.html "approximately 22" x 14" x 9" or 56 x 35 x 23 cm" That leaves you plenty of room for soft sided purse or small backpacks. However, if by "backpack" you mean a full-on hiking backpack... then that is another discussion. Have you also considered the weight of the luggage plus the four passengers against what the vehicle is rated at? |

I am afraid that you won't have enough space with "domestic rollers". Our ED was 10 days including mountain, lake, and beach wear. Three Tumi international sized roller bags (roughly 22x16x9), one Tumi tri-fold garmet bag (about the same size as the international roller), two small personal shoulder bags for each kid, one larger carry-on size shoulder bag for the wife, and a Domke camera bag for cameras and iPad.
Here is the stack 'o luggage And one of the car, at the Welt Here was the packing criteria: a) carry everything on the plane outbound. Had a connection in Heathrow and didn't want any lost luggage slowing causing a delay b) fit everything in the trunk when we parked somewhere c) carry their own stuff (keep in mind two ages kids 5 and 8) d) allow some space for anything purchased along the way I would be certain that the bags you have fit. As you can see, we were pretty tight. But that is nothing in the car except people and a couple toys, iPods, etc.

Soft-sided FTW. If you look extra carefully, the reason we went with the Tumi international as a family "standard" was that they are not hard sided on the front...and my wife took advantage of that - as you can see they are definitely over the 8" depth stated on the spec sheet
