So I am in love
I have an F80 M3 and today I figured let me go test drive the M5 because I still felt something was missing. The M3 is far more playful as we all know but that M5 just feels like more of monster. I love my F80 but when sitting in that M5 and driving it it was a world of a difference.
My main issue right now the one I test drove is automatic. Anyone rocking stick in this car? Anyone who has stick live in Bergen county NJ? I'd love to take a look at the car. |

M5
You did not test drive an automatic...
You have driven an ultimate manual with ultimate SMG. It is ( in my opinion the pinnacle of the driving pleasure ) an essence of automotive power, luxury and total refinement ... Manual will not please you as much as the SMG does ( my opinion ) |

Automatic -> SMG -> DCT > Getrag GS7D36BG M Double-Clutch Transmission (DCT) with Drivelogic !!
Good video, it sums it up nicely. A manual transmission is sublime in a Caterham, but for me regardless how good the manual gearbox is, the M-DCT suits the car and makes it a usable daily drive. |

Freezy,
It's tough swimming against the current but if you are asking the question, you already know your answer. Unfortunately, I'm in S.Cal but if I can address any questions regarding the manual transmission let me know.

Finally, someone with their head on straight. Now I know I'm not the crazy one. Forget the manual. Yes it's a great thing that BMW actually designed and built a 6MT F10 M5, but it really was only done to satisfy the American market. BMW simply didn't want another backlash as with what happened when the released the 2006 M5 with only an SMG Transmission option. In the F10 M5 the 6MT has long throws the clutch isn't that well balanced and it slows the car down considerably. Although I will say that you can definitely feel the heart and soul of the car much more through the stick compared to the DCT shifter knob which feels like a lifeless system, like the fly by wire system on the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, it's still a vastly superior system than the old cable and pulley flight control system.

Anyways this is an old debate. Lets just let the OP decide for himself. I am only trying to dispense advice given my own experiences.
