question on first model year m5?
hey guys i am wondering if there are many issues with the first model year m5s out there which would be 2013. i want to buy an m5 and sell my family car that is a 2011 bmw 550i which was the first model year car that i ever bought, and it started leaking oil slowly and smoking from the exhaust at times, a month after the damn warranty expire... i had the rims crack twice on it and it doesnt have runflats. but i said i wont be buying the first model year cars anymore but found a nice 13 m5 with only 3k miles for 75k , even though i was looking for 14 or 15 year models, can someone share if the 13s been having lots of issues? i rather just get a 14 or 15 and pay a little more if there are known issues from the first model years. thanks in advance

Mine was 2013 model year and I had it for less than 2 yrs. During the time I owned it,
excessive oil consumption (hit & miss on some but I had this issue) squeaky brakes (known issue and maybe even now still) wheels clicking sound (front wheels) coolant leaking due to improper clamps (design flaw ?) much harsher ride (if compared to the 550 which I came from (MY2011)) |

So far the only problem I have had with my 2013 M5 is a cracked windshield. Otherwise, it has been trouble free. I do think the price they are selling that 2013 M5 with 3K miles on it is a bit high. You're better off getting a 2014 unless they lower the price to mid 60K.

the mileage is the biggest factor in the price being higher, u look at 10k miles and its ten k cheaper it seems

Still have my 13 from October 2012 ED delivery. No significant issues....it was after the oil pump recall and the coolant line/clamp recall has been performed on it. DCT Clutch learning was reset, and the rest as they say has been "easy living." I'm at 64k+ miles.

good to hear that some of you at least had it easy lol. it will be a family car for me and my wife to take the family out on so it would suck to have it in the shop all the time.

Keep in mind the M5's first year was 2012 overseas if you are using that as a gauge for first year problems. I have a 2013 M5 and didnt have a single issue with it and will miss it when its traded in tomorrow.

couldnt agree with you more, but the color combo is just not out there that i wanted. red inteiror on white or on silver were my choices and thats the only one that has it, i wouldnt even think about it if it had 15k plus miles on it to. the inrest for a used car and for me i think is super good, because i never had anything that low in all my car loans. last two were 8.9 and 5.9 on the current loan because my credit is not the best .

Horrible deal. Skip it. You can get better optioned 14's in that price point.

I've done a ton, and I mean a ton, of research on this model year. They have no more issues than the 12s or the 14s. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It's an M, so it's a temperamental little bitch, but worth every ache. My '12 X5M guzzled oil, too, but in the end, it was such an amazing car.
The price point of your ride is a bit high, but only because of the mileage. I paid 69k for a '13 with 15k miles on her. I got 1.9% financing. So worth it.

I've had a '13 since it was new and it has about 18k miles. Oil consumption is normal for these cars. The only real issue I've had is with the hoses. I had a vacuum line disconnect from one of the turbos resulting in an extreme loss in power. I had a coolant line come lose resulting in a slow coolant leak. I have also had a cracked upper oil pan resulting in a slow oil leak. Other than that I consider it one of my favorite cars period.
However there we several improvements in '14. 2014 was the LCI for the F10. So the car has an improved iDrive system with touch control, much sportier steering wheel, and double spoked "M5" front kidney grills. Most importantly there were changes to the engine. '14s and newer are much easier to tune. I believe the waste gates on the turbos on a '13 are electronically controlled and '14+ they were changed to mechanical. In addition to that you had the addition of the competition package, LED lighting package, and carbon ceramic brakes. I love my car. But if I could do it all over again I would have waited for a '14....

Just returned my '13 after a 3 year lease (November 2012 delivery). 45k miles when returned. Normal high oil consumption and squeaky brake issues. During the last 4-5k miles, it started to develop some issues with the nav/infotainment. Randomly would display "No Signal" while driving and then reboot. Also, would stop working until restart of car.
Outside of that (minor issues) it was a good car. Not sure I would have wanted to see what happened from 50k to 100k miles though. Would highly recommend a CPO or equivalent warranty in this range of mileage. My recommendation would be to look for a 14 or newer. First year bugs worked out, LCI, Comp pack. Probably not THAT much more expensive (which is all relative at these levels of car). |

thanks for everyones reply, my initial search was honestly for a 14 or newer, since i wanted the lower miles the better car and usually its the newer ones that do plus other benefits. i tried to apply for my personal bank loan for a car and it got rejected so that didnt help, i found a 13 that was the only 13 i would prob consider because it had only 3k miles , fully loaded with state 2 mods on top of that, and also had the red leather interior and trim that not many of the Ms on the market had. i lucked out with the owner knowing a broker that approved my loan with a 3 percent interest ,( something i had never had before on a car loan) so i went ahead and jumped on it. still has warranty for couple years so if it starts acting up in to many ways i would sell it and get a newer one down the road if it came to that. as of now i will enjoy this car!
