Car lost all power steering, thankfully while I was sitting in traffic and not during a high speed turn. Has this happened to anyone? Car has 18k on it, I don't hit shit or ever turn the wheel to full lock. In 5 minutes I have to pull up to the 7th floor of a parking garage, I wasn't planning to do arms till later tonight at the gym.

i know there was one other guy here who had his power steering go out while speeding in some canyon in cali. He was crying about how bmw should never have this type of failure.
LOL Hope you get it fixed bud. |

Went to take it to the dealer and power steering magically decided to work again. Drove it for a good 20 minutes to make sure and no issues. Also called SA and he said it could have been a software glitch. Going to hold off for now to see what happens and drive it carefully. There was no fluid leaking and no lights came on. Anyone have any ideas?

Think I remember seeing 2 other instances recently - the one TrevorM3 mentioned and another less histrionic thread, but along the same failure scenario (ie it failed, then automagically started working again)

They ran out of bmws and I didn't have an appointment, I just showed up. I'm gonna fuck around in this thing because why not. I bet I can get this thing to skid 100 feet on an e-brake slide later when I leave work.

I picked up my M5 at the Performance Center in August and drove it about 100 miles until my first stop. Parked the car in front of the hotel, went in to check-in and came back out to move the car to the parking lot. No power steering, exactly as the previous examples reported here.
I man handled the car to the parking lot, did everything I (Dealer and BMW Assist) could think of, to no avail. Called BMW Roadside to have it towed to the nearest dealership and left the car for about two hours. Came back out as the tow truck neared and the problem persisted, so I had them take it. Next morning the dealership called me and told me that when they started the car it worked fine, and couldn't replicate the problem. Sigh, what a way to start ownership of this car. The day I pick it up (after waiting on the stop delivery for the rear differential) it gives me problems that the dealership can't replicate. Cancelled our plans for the Blue Ridge Parkway and Tail of the Dragon for fear the power steering could go out at any moment and drove home. Three months later and it never has happened again. Who knows. |
