I always reset the trip odometer after a fill up. If I hit 250 miles and the fuel gauge was halfway I would know something was wrong.

sorry op, I know that didn't help, but I don't ever recall running vehicle out of gas unexpectedly.

Sounds like a question for your service advisor at the dealership.

This used to happen to me because I would always wait until the tank is less than qt tank to actually fill up. You need a fuel injector/emission cleaning.

There can be dirt in your tank backed up cause the reader in there to not drop lower than a half tank reading. That's what I was told when it happened to me and it worked just fine afterwards. Unless it's something much bigger.

I have had this happen on my motorcycles from time to time. I just run a bottle of Techron fuel system treatment (Gray bottle) and it clears it right up. I bet your level sensors are gummed up. Running low fuel levels frequently can do this.

does the fuel range decrease after the half tank? if it does. then the level sensor is good and may lead to a bad cluster. If the range and the needle both get stuck, then that may lead to a bad level sensor.

gas tank

If I'm correct on this one (and I've had the exact case like that before ) ... A friend of mine drove over a large pot hole, he thought the car ( BMW ) Killed all the wheels and suspension, after a brief check up there was no obvious signs of trauma, so he carried on till.... within a week I got a call that he run out of gas even though the gage showed 1/2 tank. We removed the gas tank caps ( under the rear seat ) and found that floating units ( they were being fitted ( seated )on rubber grommets ) in the tank was knocked out of its seat, that was all. hopefully that is all that you have, those gages are a mechanical devices after all. Hope that helps
Cheers !
