MSE. AVG used to be the shiz. However, it got really sluggish a couple three years back. Since then, I’ve been using Security Essemtials and have never looked back.

I also use MSE plus Faronics Deep Freeze. MSE has been pretty good about detecting things but one thing you need to keep in mind, AV software can't keep you 100% out of trouble if you have bad surfing habits.

The Faronics Deep Freeze is probably the main security software for my systems. It "freezes" the state of the hard drive. You can write and read to it normally. But when you reboot, it restores everything back to the frozen baseline state. This ensures there are no imbedded cookies, tracking crap, or any malicious software installed.

But if you want to stick with other AV/anti-malware type software, many companies are using Cylance. If you bought your computer recently, chances are the software is already preloaded and you just need to buy a license key to turn it on.

txs ZX, makes sense, makes me feel a bit better

I'm of the school, "back it up" and different accounts.

I had that once when I got hit with a ransomware.
So I rebooted into another account, killed the hit account and just restored it.

So what I'm also hearing is I should have a different laptop for surfing Xhamster ?

LOL. Yes. If you want to visit some adventurous sites, do it on an isolated computer which isn't online when other computers are and vice versa. I know some people have a dedicated computer they use only for online banking and such.

With my use of Deep Freeze, it forces me to save files and data to offline storage. So nothing is permanently stored on any of my computers I frequently use to connect to the Internet.

Using Deep Freeze and whatever built in Windows AV is available on my PCs for 10+ years, I've never had an issue with any Internet acquired nasties.

BTW, does windows defender run automatically now I have uninstalled AVG ?
or do I need to re-install windows defender

I thought defender disabled after AVG was installed

and is defender an AVG ? i.e. can you have both MSE and defender ?

Also it depends on your hardware - if your PC is kinda slowish - then it's better to use the in-built system.

Check your "security settings" in control panel, I think you need to re-enable it.

Many anti virus programs are VERY sluggish and/or costly(I'd advise against it unless your computer is very fast). Also keep in mind that most if not all anti virus programs cannot be completely deleted off your computer... I suggest sticking with MSE and use Malwarebytes along with CCleaner occasionally and your computer should be able to stay safe while maintaining it's speed.

If you're not using a multicore CPU by now, then you're way behind the curve... I'm just running the free version of BitDefender on my seven year-old AthlonX2 PC (Win7-64, 4GB RAM, 250GB SSD) and I haven't had any performance issues.

I spent $6000 and custom built my computer myself so I don't have anty issues with speed at all but I just wanted to give my honest opinion. Even modern computers with multicore can show significant slower speeds with some AV programs. If you're just using you computer for browsing, facebook, youtube and such than you wont have any problems but if your a gamer, you'll notice it.

Microsoft has been incorporating elements of EMET, which used to be an add-on, into its standard anti-malware, making it much better than before. And the theory goes that they have deeper hooks into and knowledge of the OS than anyone else.

IF you think your computer might be slowed down by a single AV program, just try running two at the same time!!

So I tried an experiment, I uninstalled MSE and went back to AVG for about a month

I ran a full scan it brought up 7 threats 3 of which it could clean,
I don't have the threats to hand "BUT" when I looked into them
the I think 3 of the 4 False Positives

I think previously this was my problem also I have a lot of shareware and it picks up stuff as virus/malware and also just other stuff when you google AVG forums say
"Oh AVG are aware of it"

But with the MSE, not a peep
