HELP - Front End Popping Noise Driver's Side
UPDATE -- FIXED (see post below)
====================== Gents, I have been noticing some weird popping noises from the driver's side front on my 2013 M5. Mostly noticeable at slow speeds and when it's relatively quite in the cabin. It's not a grinding or thud noise and hard to describe other than light periodic popping. It happens even when going straight. Thoughts? Is there a known issues or SIB for this? Thanks for your help. ====================== Okay, so the problem has been resolved. I am posting it here and at the end in case someone else may have this problem in the future. Since the issue was coming from the driver's side, the problem was isolated to the left control arm and thrust rod. These were replaced, a wheel alignment performed, and no more weird and annoying popping noises. The cars feels just like it should. Last edited by Advantage; 04-22-2019 at 08:51 AM.. |

I had something very similar a few months ago coming from the passenger side. Exactly like you describe as a low popping or clunking noise. It ended up being a loose linkage on the front sway bar. Service was able to tighten it up and fixed the problem.

Thanks for the information. Dealer is telling me the control arms and bushings need to be replaced. And, of course, they have to replace both sides (passenger and driver) due to safety concerns. I am not sure I am believing this based on your story and others.

Replacing both sides is not needed, but is recommended... just not for safety reasons. That's complete BS. I recommend doing both sides so they match in wear, and so your alignment isn't effected negatively. This is pretty common practice across all vehicles depending on which specific design is being worked on. If it's clunking/popping low speed even going straight, it's probably a swaybar link. Could be other things too. Best to have it checked out by a 2nd opinion.

I've never heard of having to replace both control arms for safetly issues.. that's bs
only thing u gotta replace in pairs is shocks and struts I believe your issues is stabilizer link. I would at least start with that since it's the cheapest |
