Transmission rattle in neutral
Hello
I have tried for the last couple weeks to get info on this topic without any luck. I just bought a 2013 M5 with a DCT at the end of October with 56,000 miles. I have enjoyed the car thus far but have noticed a rattle similar to a throw out bearing (i understand this car doesn't have a throw out bearing) when at a full stop or in neutral. The sound goes away as soon as i start going forward/engaging the clutch. The noise is loud enough to hear with the windows up. I have taken the car to the original dealership i purchased it from who said it was "Normal"and a BMW specialty shop who recommended changing the fluid I guess my questions is are these transmission inherently noisy? Thank you for the feedback in advance! |

I was speaking to another person on the forum about a similar noise like yours on his M5 DCT when at full stop running then no noise when moving off. A lot of suggestions were made by contributors and he too added that his dealer said that it was 'normal' which it obviously isn't.
He recorded the sound to put it on here which was a rattly metallic sound and I can only think of a worn Dual Mass Flywheel. There's a bearing that can be replaced but when DCT is moved people usually have a complete replacement for peace of mind. If that is the problem then while it's there your DCT could have a trans oil change, would make sense while its up on a ramp. I'm not saying this is definitely the cause but worth drilling your agent about especially if you have warranty. Good luck! |

Just want to confirm there's a thread about this concern. No one has been able to verify what it is and why, just speculation. Mine has been doing it since 30k and was told by the dealer that it's "normal". Have also confirmed it on a buddies m4 with similar miles.

So maybe it wasn't worded exactly related to dct noise, but if you read OP's concern and listen to audio clips posted he describes a noise that is only heard in neutral and goes away as soon as vehicle starts creeping forward.
Is this knock ? https://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1525789 |

And you have this niose from 30K without any issues?
I have the same noise since i bought the car without any issues. The dealer told me aswell that this noise is normal. It would be nice to know where this noise comes from so i don`t have to worry about this anymore. |

I have the same rattle on my 2014 M5 Comp that has 100k miles.
I bought it used at 86k, has always been there and haven't noticed any issues. Before reading this thread I also suspected the fly wheel because it is the same sound I had when I installed an aftermarket lightweight flywheel on my e36 m3. I think it is very common for the lightweight flywheels. |

I have a similar sound, my car has covered 15k miles. Sounds like a clutch release bearing, once the car is in motion the noise goes.

I have a rattle as well, but not necessarily in neutral. I can be at a stoplight in drive and hear it, but when i give it gas it goes away
