Why Turkey 2020 may prove to be prophetic for the 2021 Formula One Season

Turkey 2020 was a standout race for many reasons...most obvious among these was Sir 7ewis achieving his record tying 7th World Driving Championship.

When you look beyond the obvious there were many things at play under the surface. Among the outcomes were:

Albon losing his race seat based on poor performance in this race.

Perez having a stellar drive to finish on the podium.

Vettel having a resurgent drive to a podium finish while winning driver of the day on merit.

Stroll on Pole. Once again showing his rain prowess.

Verstappen leading all three practice sessions yet failing to achieve pole position and being relegated to a 6th place finish.

Perez holding Verstappen off from an attack resulting in a massive Verstappen spin.

Sir 7ewis coming from 6th place to win the race in the most treacherous conditions I've seen in a Formula One race in decades.

Now to 2021

Perez to Red Bull and if his defense of VER in this race is any indication, he will give Max quite a few problems on race day.

Vettel to a a new team which will give him a fresh start and another chance to prove his worth as a driver and potential team leader. His 3rd in Turkey signaled that he hasn't lost the fire.

Max under pressure throughout the race and falling from 2nd to 6th after quite a few lurid spins.

Ferrari producing a good chassis and being handicapped by a handicapped power unit. The 3rd and 4th could have been a 2nd and 3rd with a little more good fortune.

McLaren finishing above both Red Bulls leading to this finishing order, by first chassis:

Mercedes
Aston Martin
Ferrari
McLaren
Red Bull
Renault
AlphaTauri
Alfa Romeo
Williams
Haas

I predict this may be pretty close to the 2021 finishing order. Flame suit on.

Thoughts?

Oh man those are some bold predictions:

Personally I think:

1) Mercedes
2) Red bull (With perez I think they are going to be even more formidable especially with the points they earn)
3) Aston Martin (with the amount of money Lawrence stroll is dumping in and with Lance actually doing pretty decently, and Seb coming to the team I think they have 3rd in the bag - especially since they pretty much had 3rd last year asides from a few accidents that put them out of it.)
4) McLaren (Hard to put Mclaren any lower especially since they did really well last year and now they have an mercedes pu + Daniel Ricardo as the second driver, I think they will do really well this year).
5) Ferrari (I don't think much will change this year, I think they are just going to bank 2021 and work on their 2022 car, instead of investing so much into a chassis that will be done this year).
6) Alpine
7) Alpha tauri
8) Alpha romeo
9) Williams
10) Hass

Thanks!

I like your thinking, as well.

If Ferrari get back full fuel flow as is rumored, they will be back at 2017-2018 levels of contention. We are aligned on McLaren with the exception of finishing position. I originally though McLaren might finish 2nd but with the Ferrari news, I'm not certain. There is one thing that McLaren has done better than almost everyone else: in-season development.

One thing is certain, we will have an amazing season!!

Thanks! F1 is a hard thing to predict.

I don't think even with full fuel flow ferrari will have the same power levels as before, because the reason why they had so much power and straight line speed in 2018 was because of the controlled oil leak from the intercooler to bypass the fuel limit.

You're welcome!

The Ferrari cheating trick was very clever. Once removed, they were on the back foot in a way not seen in decades.

Lol Lewis.

I wonder if George Russel will get the seat next year if hamilton doesn't resign. I heard Aston wanted to sign lewis and knowing Lawrence stroll he would probably pay Lewis as much as he wants.

I genuinely think Mclaren with Merc power will be challenging Merc. 2nd place will be between Bottas & Ricciardo.

Idk, they had to spend all of their development tokens on fitting the motor and their aero could have been an after thought compared to getting the pu (transmission changes, diff might need to change, radiator, intakes, body work etc) in. Plus mercedes stopped w11 development early so they could work on the w12, so I really don't see anyone coming close again. I think they'll have a 1 sec + advantage throughout the year until they stop w12 development early to work on the w13.

You’re right. Mclaren was decent last year and now they'll have more power. That’s why I said Ric will challenge Bottas. Nobody will touch Ham

Does that sound at all likely to become a reality at least for 2022?
Surely the main point of Stroll buying into F1 was to own a team so that his son has the best chance of winning races.
Getting in the best driver as his team mate would tend to show up his sons abilities?
On the other hand Toto is a shareholder in AM so if Mercedes decided to pull the plug on F1 it might make sense for Toto and Hamilton to go there...but I'll not be putting any money on it.

No clue if that is a possibility in the slightest, hence why I said it was a rumour.

There are tracks where the Mercedes is disadvantaged because of altitude and other climatic conditions.

Don't forget cooling and aero when it tries to follow behind other cars.

IKR -1 second qualifying times on most of the field and still such struggles.

But honestly I really love the mercedes dominance from an engineering stand point.

This.

I admire and learn from excellence. Mercedes-AMG F1 team is a case study in operational excellence.

Yeah I love how they care about the small things like:

1) every factory worker has a parking spot so they start the day off not being frustrated finding a spot to park.

2) They have a no blame policy, just learn from the mistake and move on, this way everyone takes accountability and works harder and yet no one feels bad from messing up.

3) They have a see it, say it, fix it policy so issues get fixed immediately.

4) If they win the constructors championship everyone at the factory no matter what position (even cleaners, cooks, etc) gets a $10k bonus. This drives everyone to work harder and as a team.

Meanwhile at other teams they try to get Mercedes parts banned, or they try to play mind games with their drivers to get better contract negotiations. Like look at red bull, during Hamilton's negotiations they were saying merc should use Russel as black mail to get a cheaper contract on Lewis. Imagine how much of those tactics they use on their own drivers and how much that stress would affect them. Also look at ferrari they just signed sainz and already they are saying Mick Schumacher will drive for them soon, imagine the pressure that puts on Sainz and Leclerc.
