The "spray and pray" technique
It's a term I've heard used to describe putting a simple message out there widely, and seeing what sticks.
I had a friend at university who would go to a club, then start wandering around asking the women "wanna fuck?". Most would turn away or tip a drink over him, but invariably one would say yes and they'd leave together. I believe a certain portion of the population use that technique on dating sites too - just send a message to 100 women, and all you need is one to say yes and you've achieved your goal. But the point of this wasn't sex or dating sites - it was the "viagra" posts that show up here occasionally. Could be total scam sites of course, or could be legit sites trying to drum up business - but I wonder how successful it is? If you get your message in front of 10,000 viewers and only 0.1% click, that's 10 sales you didn't have before. But is it 0.1%? How many click the link I wonder. I expect that *some* must do it, or they wouldn't keep making the effort to create the posts. If you try something and it never works, then at some point you'd give up. So which one of you clicked it? |

Marketer here. Yea, it really is as simple as that. In the direct mail days, we could mail out truly massive quantities of mail and be thrilled with a 2% response rate because the profit was worth it.
In today's world of email and social marketing, it's even more effective. |

My favorites are the spam posts about essay writing help. How many members on a BMW forum need help writing essays?

I get the mass mailings for legit businesses for things every household might need - I get mailers for garden companies, spouting cleaners etc. which makes some sense, but I've never seen a mass mailer in the mail for viagra or CPAP machines other similar very specific targeted things. Perhaps they think BMW drivers all need viagra? I think they'd be better off on the Mercedes or Jaguar forums |

In my experience "spray and pray" aka "Shotgun" marketing is good for low quality candidates and so you have to wager your risk reward accordingly.
I had a couple of those kind of fall in my lap. One in particular seemed "ok" for roll but I didn't want her knowing where I lived so we opted for her car. Not 10 minutes into this misadventure some dudes kicking on the door and we both get pulled out and beat up. Another instance was a considerably more attractive candidate who managed to hook me into walking her out to her car where a sizable young man was waiting with a knife and liberated me of my Rolex. After that I opted to better screen my candidates.

No way no how am I ever clicking a link from some random post or email for any product. Even if it was something I would be interested in. For me if a company has to resort to these types of tactics, I question their integrity as a company. A reputable company doesn't need to resort to these techniques to drum up additional business.
In the days of mass mailers, the only annoyance would be your mail box gets full and you just toss them into the recycle bin. No harm no foul. Now a days, you click on that link, you have no idea what malware that site is going to push onto your device in the background. It's the same as getting an STD without the fun leading up to it. |

It’s like the left lane assholes. Everywhere I go online and people I talk to in real life ALLLL say how horrible it is and they don’t know why people do it… given the info I have from the limited group of people I interact with NO ONE should ever be squatting in the left lane. Yet there they are every freaking day. So who are these people who have managed to go their whole lives not knowing they shouldn’t eat shit on the left lane or click random links from random emails??? Maybe they are the same people!? |

I've heard it called several names throughout the years, we referred to it as machine gun marketing, one of the bullets will manage to find a target if you shoot enough of them. I preferred sniping, pick your target and pursue it. I've used both; both are effective. I prefer sniping. Accuracy, hones the skills, you get what you want, versus settling for what you can get.
To touch on the topic, in this day and age; it upsets me that we are still inundated with marketing strategies like this. We should be smarter than this by now. What really upsets me is that we are still dealing with shit like this because it works. It's "those people" that keep us here, being offered assistance with essays and selling us viagra. It honestly would make it so much easier if I didn't need to write all these damn essays and later reward myself with sexual marathons. Bastards. I'd also like to draw attention to the fact that if these sites were on up and up, why is there a need to be shady about it to begin with. I know I didn't buy my last car because a total stranger sent me an email or I found a thread on a forum with a hotlink in it. Hell, I buy my groceries from the meth addict that broke into my house only to explain to me how much cheaper my produce could be. |

But would you want the one who said yes to a bum with drinks poured on him? I guess if you're desperate.
