F10 M5 AFE Power Magnum Force Stage 2 Pro 5r CEL

Hello, posting this for a friend running AFE Power Magnum Force Stage 2 Pro 5r which keeps throwing a intermittent CEL. Second time throwing the intakes back on and it is once again throwing a CEL for 102002 Air Mass too Low or sometimes Too High. When stock intakes are put back on it goes away. Car is also running Bootmod stage 2 91 and DP's. Car is well maintained no misfires or malfunctions. Heard that it may take some time for the MAF to relearn? Or maybe MAF dirty due to the pre-oiled Pro 5R media filters, maybe should switch it out to PRO Dry S filters? Also saw somewhere that it's possible to install the MAF sensors backwards? Trying to think of every scenario that could be leading to this. It's not like these are cheap intakes either, great heatshields and AFE is a reputable brand. Any input is greatly appreciated from other owners with intakes!

Some M5's just don't like intakes. I did some reading on this a while ago and the remedy was that some cars have old software on board. If your boy does get a software update and it still throws a code then his options are (1) Project Gamma intakes (have yet to see or read of anyone throwing a code (2) K&N or BMC Panel Filters with Air Scoops.

Hey, wondering if you ever found the fix to this problem? Just installed the same intake with the dry filter version and after about 50 miles I’m getting the same 102002 code. I can clear the code but it come back up after about another 50 miles. All the hose clamps are tight and the installation went smooth. Pretty frustrating

I'd say clean the MAFs. I have the aFE Momentums, dry filters, and don't have this issue.

Ended up cleaning the sensors. Cleaned the filters. No loose hose clamps. Car had no codes for about 50 miles then threw the 102002 “not enough airflow” code again. On top of that, a new code popped up saying the mixture across both banks was too lean. How can it be getting not enough air, but also making the mixture too lean. Either way I’m going to throw the stock boxes back on and see if the same codes come back.

If the diameter of the tube at the MAF is even 2mm different to OEM then thats a 5% difference in cross sectional area. If the tube is bigger than stock for example, the car still gets the same volume of air, just that air will be moving a bit slower at the MAF, making the MAF see a wrong reading. And these MAF's are so sensitive a tiny difference in diameter will cause issues. That's my theory anyway.
