Michelin PS4s star v. regular

I recently purchased brand new PS4s and I noticed that on the front, one side is a star tire PS4s and the other is a regular PS4s, I'm not sure why America's Tire ordered it like that, sometimes I feel like I know more about tires than they do, but I go through tires like crazy. The tread pattern looks the same, but they have different labels to them, Michelin Total Performance, Blackwall Premium Touch, and Blackwall, which appears to be the regular. I noticed it because the sidewall has a different look.

Does anybody have any insight on this? I'm not too concerned, should I be?

Makes no difference whatsoever star or no star on your M5, you can even use Porsche N or Audi AO spec w h y as long as the size is right. All pilot sport 4S tires 'adjust' their tread grip under extreme situations unlike other makes.

I would expect the tyres to be sold in matching pairs. If I was sold a mismatched pair of tyres from a retailer I would raise the issue with them (assuming it hasn't been an unreasonable amount of time since the purchase) in the hope that they would rectify it.

Thanks guys, I don't like the mismatched look and good to know there is no performance difference. I already got a nail in the rear so I have to take it back so I will bring it up. My first set of 315/30's in the back, and a nail in the first 20 miles. These rears are not cheap, especially with the hazard package and now I have to put up with a patch. Typical, and thanks again!

On a side note: On my M760i, I went crazy and put 305/35s in the back last year and went with the Ferrari spec PS4s, they actually have a much higher load rating. I believe that if the load rating is the same across the board, no difference in performance, but if the load rating is different, maybe there is a difference there. Maybe not and it's just a scam. PS, if you ever get a 7 series, stay away from PS4s, they don't last long and you don't need that tire for this type of car...waste

There are huge differences between the various manufacturer ratings! Particularly the Porsche N0 ones! They're designed for a car with an engine in the back (and therefore a lot more weight) and the sidewalls are totally different.

In the OP's situation, it wouldn't bother me if they were regular MPS4S's or the star rated ones ones, but I wouldn't be happy with a miss match on the same axle personally.

There are a lot of P cars that are not rear engined like Taycans, 944s,928s etc all your thinking of is new 911s, and it's fine to fit non N tyres to those and 911s even if it would only bother you!

Garage List
I have a thread on this for the F90.

https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2082313

In my case the only difference is non-star is more tread depth and maybe a slightly different pattern (but that might also be width related).

I notified America's tire of my concern, they happily said that they would order the tire and contact me, but I missed their call this morning.

I'm still under the impression that if the load rating is the same, no issue. I didn't see any differences in the tread depth on the two mismatched that I have. Example of the load rating; on my M760, I put 305/35/20 in the back with a 107y rating, as opposed to a 104y rating. The only thing I noticed about the tire was that it wore quickly, like all Michelin summer tires.

According to the video on the F90 forum that you shared, they are definitely different tires.

False. It is reckless to advise OP that it's ok to use different tires on the same axle. The differences may be subtle, but they are absolutely different. Each Michelin manufacturer spec has different tread compounds, tread profiles, and measurements. In fact, Ive had the N spec(Porsche), ford spec, and K spec (Ferrari) cup 2s side by side in the exact same size, and the Porsche spec were almost a cm wider and clearly had a different shoulder profile. You can get away with both of any manufacturer, but mixing is just a bad idea.

OP, depending upon how you drive, it may not make much of a difference, but if you are tracking or doing aggressive Canyon runs, I wouldn't chance it with different tires on the same axle. Normal street driving with some occasional hard cornering, it probably won't make much difference. I would take it back to the retailer and tell them it is a safety issue putting different tires on the same axle and they need to fix it ASAP. See what they say.

Didn't see this before replying. Good to see they owned up to their mistake. Enjoy the new sticky rubber.

So long as it's the same size it's fine. I have star less Michelin tyres on mine and heaven forbid! one rear tyre is AO spec
As far as P cars are concerned the N spec are probably important for the most powerful latest 911's especially on the rears but there are many others I've mentioned before and I missed out 968's that don't need the 1cm wider you say N spec. Not all P cars are 911's.
