Report: F10 M5 Manual Transmission Option for US. 190mph Increased Top Speed Option
BIMMERPOST NEWS Report: F10 M5 Manual Transmission Option for US. 190mph Increased Top Speed Option Speculation around possible transmission options for the upcoming F10 M5 continues. Last week relieving news trickled in as EVO's Chris Harris and other outlets confirmed that BMW will not resort to their widely used 8-speed ZF automatic transmission but instead use a beefed up 7-speed M-DCT for the M5. This leaves one remaining 'mystery' regarding M5 transmission options -- whether there will be a manual transmission available. German Focus appears to know more on the matter as they mention in a today's article about fast sedans: "A manual transmission will again be available for the M5 - but for the US market only where operating a manual gearbox is still not considered troublesome." This makes perfect sense as BMW surely doesn't want to have the 'E60 M5 situation' all over again. Back in 2004, BMW introduced the E60 M5 and announced it as SMG transmission only. US enthusiasts successfully voiced their dismay about this move, and BMW eventually offered an optional manual transmission. According to Focus, F10 M5 customers can again also opt for an increased top speed. As with the current M3 and the last M5, it's called M Drivers Package and will raise the top speed of the F10 M5 to 305kph (M3: 280kph). It's doubtful though if this option will make it to the US. There'll be more information about the F10 M5 very soon, and we'll bring you all details, photos and videos. Stay tuned! [Source: Focus.de] |

I'm sorry. But does anyone else find this quote odd?

Nice to see the 6MT option, I just wonder if it'll be a worthy fit for the car unlike the 6MT on the E60 M5.

Not at all. I have a bunch of family that lives in Portugal/France and they hate manual transmissions because they have had to live with it all their lives. Finding an automatic in Europe was something next to impossible and expensive for them in the past. Now, that automatic transmissions are more popular in Europe, they are all loving them. My Uncle (lives in France and drives an awesome 3-series) described a manual transmission as being "too much of a distraction while driving" and I agree with him. While I love my manual, a DCT transmission wouldn't be a bad idea. It could help you focus more on driving instead of changing gears. Next car will most likely be a DCT.

Wonder what the 1-gear sacrifice will equate to in fuel economy. And by fuel economy I mean gas guzzler tax.

Actually I thought it was kind of funny. I think his motive was to "zing" US drivers a bit for choosing manual transmissions despite their drawbacks. Or I guess maybe he could be taking a shot at his fellow countrymen for abandoning the manual transmission because they found it too much work to operate. But yeah, either way, definitely a little douchey of him I'd say.
They definitely didn't mean the UK since the 550i 6MT is US only. I think even the 535i 6MT might be US only - can't remember. south, do any 5 series sold overseas sport a 6MT option? |

Depends on the tallest gear ratio not necessarily how many gears

6MT is standard for all models but 550i, 535d, and the xDrive models.

That's interesting - I don't think we even have a 528i 6MT option at all, for example.
So, is the 6MT optional on the 550i? I didn't think it was available. I know the diesel models do not offer a manual, right? |

BMW you just guaranteed yourself a future M5/M6 customer. The manual option changes everything! Awesome news! Can't wait to see it.

And only less than 10% buyers will opt for it... BMW is getting sick of offering it, and no one buying them.
