Disabling ASD

The first mod to my car, other than having them de-badge it during PDI, is to disable ASD. While I appreciate the sound of the engine, I don't need fake engine noise competing with my music to see which can deafen me first. And, after owning the i3, a quiet cabin is a happy cabin.

Can we disable ASD on the X5M by simply unplugging it, as mentioned here: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1082175

Or can we only disable it via coding?

I haven't done it, but I'm pretty sure pulling the fuse to the ASD module works. Coding is ASD off is super easy. Just as simple as changing the ASD module from F85 to F20. While you're at it, code Euro LED headlights (totally worth it). Seat belt warnings off. Fogs stay on with high-beams. Key Fob to: open/close windows/sunroof/trunk. No legal disclaimer on Navi screen. Turn engine off to unlock doors. Those little things make a BMW more enjoyable.

With ASD off, B&O sound system comes alive.

Got a cheat sheet for me? I've coded my i3 so am not entirely new to it.

And apologies if this has been covered in the past (I'm sure it has).

Cheat Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...9s4/edit#gid=0

F15 Coding: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1033991

My Coding Thread: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...php?p=18267064

If you coded before and have the software, select F25 (not F25 Direct) to connect. What works for me: Euro LED Headlight (refer to my thread), ASD off, Key fob to open/close windows/sunroof/trunk (I don't want mirrors due to potential icing), seat belt alerts off, remove legal disclaimer, DVD in motion, unlock at engine shutoff, door handles light on when reversing, etc...

What didn't work: Euro rear fogs and brake force flashing (require Euro taillights).

coding the euro headlights / anti dazzle, you need the euro hardware to get the full effect, right?

No. The hardware is there, it's just deactivated since U.S. DOT didn't approve that feature. Euro LED coding allows the true magic to happen. Just do the VO coding as instructed on my thread.

Once coded, wait til dark, press the active high headlight button (auto highbeam), drive above 40mph, and be amazed.

At least one forum user (wdimagineer?) is of the opinion that the euro headlights throw a different beam pattern, which makes coding the leds CLOSE but not 100% anti-dazzle. Is that not the general consensus?

It works perfectly for me. It creates a tunnel and does everything on the vid. I coded this for the F80/F82 guys, they're very pleased with it.

The F10/F12/F13/F06 U.S. cameras/LEDs won't support this, even with coding. It won't create a tunnel like the X5. Maybe that's where your source is coming from.

Try the M3/M4 forum (DIY section), more traffic there to answer your question. All BMWs code about the same.

Nope. Your source is coming from having US and EU headlights in all of his BMW vehicles.

100% functionality isn't possible with the US DOT beam pattern.

Yes, it looks like it behaves properly (in most cases) but it really doesn't. I've had a friend drive my X5 M (Euro LEDs) behind me in his F15 (US LEDs) and vice versa. Both vehicles coded properly. I could tell the difference. With his US lights, I was a bit blinded, even with the "tunnel" being created.

Agreed. I'm going to put back the "US" version of the light pattern, as I'm fed up with being "flashed" for blinding people (although I think it's worse for the car in front, vs oncoming cars, with the headlight config we get here).

You can always turn the auto high-beam button off, that's what activate the tunnels. I haven't gotten any flashes yet.

and I SPECIFICALLY asked the sales guy if the '16 X5 M didn't have the stupid piped-in muffler noise. His answer, "oh no, that's gone". Darn it. Anyone know how much is pumped in? It looks like the amount of ASD varies based on if the car is in sport+, sport, etc. I'm just wondering how much of that awesome B&O soundsystem has the ASD "engineered" into it, and the acoustics, polluted. Bogus. I just wonder if even removing the ASD is the best thing if the B&O system had it built in?

Bogus.

I wonder if there's a video around comparing cabin noise levels with ASD ON vs OFF

I wonder if the "neutral" default EQ settings are actually tweaked based on the assumption that there will always be engine noise being played? Still sounds great with ASD off, to my ears. Just requires a certain volume level to really shine.

So did you disable the ASD through coding or pulling the plug on the ASD AMP. Does anyone know the location of the ASD amp on the f85

Ditto. I imagine they are. I doubt B&O would've put the trouble into the 1200 Watt system without somehow incorporating the impact of ASD. Which could mean that disabling ASD could actually lead to subpar sound from the system regardless. That's depressing. I'm hoping an audio engineer reads this, and has some sort of fix. I hate to think that the B&O is being all gacked out by piped in muffler noise...
