Took my X5M to the drag strip (Atco, NJ) DINANTRONICS Stage 1

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Let me begin by stating that I know nothing about drag racing. This is only my second time to the drag strip and first time with my X5M. I don’t know anything about 60 foot times or reaction times. I ran with my stock tires at 36 psi.

The drag strip was Atco Dragway in Atco, NJ. The weather was a cool 50 degrees with about 15 mph sustained winds and 20-25 mph gusts. I was able to get six runs in. There was a long delay between runs 2 and 3 due to an oil leak on the track.

Now for the times:
Run #1: Launch Control, DINANTRONICS Stage 1 BYPASSED, 12.366 @ 111.19 MPH
Run #2: Launch Control, DINANTRONICS Stage 1 BYPASSED, 12.459 @ 112.24 MPH
Run #3: NO Launch Control, DINANTRONICS Stage 1 ACTIVE, 12.006 @ 115.42 MPH
Run #4: NO Launch Control, DINANTRONICS Stage 1 ACTIVE, 11.973 @ 115.64 MPH
Run #5: NO Launch Control, DINANTRONICS Stage 1 ACTIVE, 11.940 @ 115.87 MPH
Run #6: Launch Control, DINANTRONICS Stage 1 ACTIVE, 12.537 @ 116.10 MPH

My best time of the night was 11.940 @ 115.87 mph (no launch control, DINANTRONICS Stage 1 active). My worst time was 12.537 @ 116.10 mph (launch control, DINANTRONICS Stage 1 active). One would think I would get a very good time with launch control and the Stage 1 activated. If anyone wants to critique my time slips, feel free to do so.

My X5M attracted a lot of attention at the track, especially after my runs. People were coming up to me asking about it, and were very impressed at its performance abilities.

Overall, it was a very fun night!

Maybe the engine got too hot and performance was decreased a little? Guess with AWD traction launch control didnt help much?

Look at the 60' with LC + Dinan. You spun the tires and killed the ET. MPH increased as it should. Stock did not have enough tq to spin with LC.

Numbers look great. Killer. Congrats !

I didn't even notice the 60' on the last run, but I think you're right, I spun the tires which killed my 1/4 mile time.

No, it's way better than a RR SS!

I'm satisfied with the Dinan tune. I was expecting a 0.1 difference, but did much better.

So true, my friend. In a RR Sport, you could probably get the groceries home, all while taking photos with stunning bokeh.

Mike -- I'm so coming to Jersey to find you!! Thanks for keeping Awesome honest!

He is going to get cocky now that he has the fastest car in the 1/4 Mile between us.

11's are seriously fast for any car let alone an SUV. All I can say is

Nice work, Steve. BMW launch control is worthless. It's also proven on the F80/F82 that you'll get better times w/o launch control. Your data and good driving adds to the validation to the speculation.

Thanks Jimmy! It seems like there is too much torque with the Stage 1 to use Launch Control. Glad it was the last run of the night.

When you didn't use LC, what method did you use?
- Brake (Hold) and Throttle to 2k rpm?
- Brake and Smash on the Throttle?

When I didn't use LC, I just held the brake and applied the throttle lightly. I didn't even pay attention to what the RPMs were (as I said, I'm a novice). When the light turned green I smashed the throttle. I probably shouldn't have waited until the light turned green; I've been told by others to leave on the last yellow in order to get a better reaction time.

The last run was 9:45 PM. My time slips show later but they were off by an hour. I think the first run was at 5:30 PM. I don't know how long they're open on the weekends.

Great times ! Were all the runs done back to back? If so the car would get even faster as it takes a little bit of time for the car to fully adapt to the piggyback. At least that's what I have noticed on all other cars with piggybacks

Thanks!

There was about 20-30 minutes between each run.

3-5mph from a tune is pretty damn good in a .25 mile!

I know on other cars I have used piggybacks on it took atleast a couple days to get the full adaption out of it and I felt significant differences it could be different with the dinan piggyback not sure. Try it again with it on the car for a week or so might be able to squeeze a bit more out of it.

Interesting, I didn't know that, thanks for the heads up! I might go again later in the month; if not, in the Spring.
