Your opinion

Hello everyone, so I need some help deciding, I was in a 7 series before f02, I'm in a grancoupe right now but I'm debating what to get next either the new 7 or go with a x5m, I k ow what some will say it's compering Apple to oranges. What you opinion and why?

I think you'll have more fun driving the X5M than the 7 series.
I didn't try the new 7 series yet , but I'm disappointed that BMW didn't put a big engine like Mercedes did in their S class with the 63 AMG.

As you said , they are in a different category ...You should try both of them to make a choice

This past week the people at BMW gave me a fully loaded new M Sport 7 Series to get/give an impression of. There's too much about the experience to write in this arena, but I will say, if being slightly disconnected from the road, cocooned in an ultra luxurious environment surrounded by all the latest, and greatest tech is what your dream is, then the new G11/12 7 Series is the way to go. In Sport Mode it handled well, had sufficient gumption to make it fun, and sporty to drive, but it wasn't anything like my M cars, or even the off-the-line torque of our BMW i car. The seats were comfortable, but not nearly as comfortable as the M seats in the X5 M. The designers of the new 7 series are all about moments in time, and creating an experience that will be remembered through touch, smell, texture, color, etc., and that plays out well through the choice of materials, and locations of them in the new 7 series. It is a good competitor to the S Class Mercedes, it just targets a slightly different dynamic of that same market.

The X5 M has current technology, but nothing groundbreaking like the 7 series. What the X5 M brings to the table that the 7 series does not, is superb connection to the road, amazing handling, physics defying ability to handle corners and roads at all speeds and approaches. It has a wonderfully clad interior swathed in the finest leather, tuned to a sportier mentality, unlike the classic elegance of the 7 series interior. The unbridled power of the X5 M is amazing. If you like a car where it always feels like you're pulling the reigns back, and restraining the beast within, then the X5 M is the car to choose, the new 7 series will not give you that feeling.

As you said, they are two very different animals, you need to decide which is best for you. By the time I returned the 7 series, I was longing, and aching to get back into the driver's seat of my X5 M. It was an amazing experience, for which I am grateful, but the end result was to reinforce that at my core, I am an M Car kind of guy!

I also had a 750LI F02, loved it. My current cars are the F06 and F85. You will have 100x more fun with the X5M than a 7series. I was part of the 7 series unveiling group and test drove it. It's nice for long road trips, but driving it everyday would be a bit boring. I do like how BMW lightened the weight to make it drive like a 5 series.

The X5M is a beast. Raw neck snapping power and great handling. Believe it or not, it has the same Nurburgring time as an E92 M3 of 8m05s. The X5M owns the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S on any track, with $50k less.

One negative thing about the X5M vs the 7series, once you go "M" it will be hard to switch back to a normal BMW.

The 7 series events I was initially involved with were so early it was when they were shipping European spec 7 series around the USA in covered flatbed trucks, and they couldn't be driven. Due to scheduling, last week was my first time driving one.

I agree with you, once you go M, you really can't go back, everything will be a letdown then.

Once you go "i" (electric), you can ONLY go "m". It is the only thing that compares.

I always had 750s, was waiting for the new 7 but decided to give the X6M a try, so far I'm happy and having so much fun!!!

Now I get up everyday and looking to drive my M, never had that feeling with the 7s

It's huge! I can't imagine to carry it in my pocket.

I have to say, I am not. If you've ever held the thing in your hand, and played with it, it's massive, and quite heavy. If they redesign it to be smaller, and lighter, I'd be on board with it. It did offer some nice functionality, but it'd be like fitting a boulder in your pocket everyday. I used the "regular" key on almost every outing I made with the 7 series.

Wish I had a hookup to do a longer term test drive of a 7 series! Interested to experience it.

The pics I saw of the keyfob really had nothing to reference in terms of size. Tech seems neat tho.

Thank you all for sharing your experience! I love how technological the new 7 is, the latest and greatest but I also want the feel on the road we also have x5 at home although it's not an m but 35i, so that why I'm debating if to get x5m or the new 7

Forget the 7 series, I can't wait for the M4 GTS I was told I get to experience when they begin getting here. Now there is a car I am excited about!
