The writer of the article subtracts the weight of the paint but does not add the weight of the wrap....

The matte black trend is getting pretty played out now. I'll take old fashioned paint on my 918, thanks. I don't even need the Weissach package.

I think I recall reading that Porsche used the wrap as a primer for the painted cars. Coming from the bicycling world, this makes sense as paint adhesion to carbon, especially 1k weave is really weak. Applying a wrap probably smoothes the surface, allows for better paint adhesion and makes repairs easier too.

Reading the article, the car was wrapped in matte black vinyl to protect the unpainted surface. So if you peel off the matte, you will see the actual unpainted surfaces.
