E70 X5M/E71 X6M/F13 M6 vs F85 X5M

Ordered the new car all options in November it arrived xmas eve. Long beech blue and mugello red. UK List £116500 (yes that is $175000 with current exchange rate!) with the service pack, Supaguard and boot matt etc. Paid £104500 for it. So there are discounts to be had.

Last four cars; E63 V10 M6 cab, E70 X5M, F13 M6 Cab and now the F85 X5M.

And we still have an E71 X6m as the "mrs" car.

I can say abeit after only 350 miles - this is the car I have been waiting for.

Since replacing the E63 V10 nothing has really peaked my interest as the noise and the way it drove made you feel excited to drive it.
The E70 X5m (having also had a 4.8i e70) was boring, drove hard on the runflats, and just didn't feel fast or handle that well. I still drive the E71 x6m occasionaly and that ones on 21" wheels and even harder and it just reminds me why I didn't like the E70 X5M.

So I was offered an F13 M6 cab ex demo loaded and thought this is the future. It was scary and dull at the same time. I could plant the V10 where I wanted it on the road in the wet at full throttle, The F13 was terrifying in the dry let alone the wet. With more than 2mm of tyre used it became proper scary to drive and you could rarely full throttle it. and when you did it sounded dull. Really dull. and the seat was bloody unconfortable and the hood made an annoying noise over 120.

So I was disheartened and lost with M. Having had 3 x M3's, alpinas , 3 x M6's, an M5, the X5m e71 and still have the E71 X6m I was going to give up and buy either a range rover, a Ferrari or a McLaren as I wanted something different and something more reliable than the BMW M range. V10 had SMG box replaced under warranty, last two M3's had SMG boxes replaced under warranty, E70 had all its injectors and half the engine under warranty, The F13 had two clutches replaced then the SMG box under warranty - M cars are very very Fragile! - its an ongoing joke in our house we actually ran a 3rd car for a while as one of the M's was always in the garage for something - sold the 3rd car last month and am literally praying for some reliability in the new F85 X5M! .

Well I wanted different was until I drove an F15 M50D. I wanted to order as the torque was epic and a giggle , in an individual blue. Then got told you cant buy individual, so migrated to the F85M. Drove it and was smitten. Its 1000% different to the old E70/E71, its fast, sounds good in manual, drives just like the M6 F13 but actually sticks to the road and the gearbox is just like the SMG gearbox in almost every way. It doesn't quite have the sound of the V10 M6, but I get goosebumps every time I drive it like the V10 M6. And its actually comfy. Took me two days to get the seat position right but when I did man its comfy. The non runflat tyres make it for me as it runs so much softer than the F13 m6 or the X5m e70 and they were on 20's and this is on 21's.

On that note wish somebody had told me they were non run flats before id ordered as it was the only option I left off. So ordered a spare wheel set for £500 from the dealer which was a bit more than £150 from factory grrrrrr. Ill probably end up getting a convertible again in a couple of years but wont try and run that as my every day car as I did with the V10 M6 for two years. Nope the X5M F85 will be staying firmly on my drive for the next four years as an every day car with a convertible (not another M6 unless the new 2017 one is epic) a future purchase.

Ive seen a few threads where people say why spend the premium over the f15 to go F85. I drove the M50d then the F85M having had a lot of M cars.....Its how it makes you feel, not how your logic brain says OMG its £30k more.

Everybody I knew thought I was mental going mugello red and long beech blue but now its arrived all I can say is in the flesh the colour combo looks so much better than any picture or video.

F15 M50D is a good car, but miles away from the F85! Great choice!
