Tips of removing standard spoiler
Apologies if this should be posted elsewhere but hoping a few of you can chime in that are in the know
Just purchased the BMW M performance carbon spoiler and Im looking to install this myself..Installation should not be problem but can any of you give me some tips in terms of removing the existing spoiler..It hasnt been touched since it left the factory so I can only assume its mounted using 3m tape... In addition, can anyone advise what variant of 3m tape to use when putting the new spoiler back on the car as I know there are lots of varieties...The spoiler is waiting for me to pick up (havent physically seen it yet) so not even sure if 3m tape is provided with it. If it is, Ill just use what BMW has given me Cheers |

Use a heat gun and bondo spreader to get off the stock spoiler. Put painters tape around the perimeter so you don't scratch it.
I used 3M VHB, and ran the tape very close to the edge. Perfect fit and no gaps. Get the 1/4" and 1/2" variety. If you need more pointers just ask. Brad

Heat gun is key to soften up the double sided tape adhesive. Good luck.

You'll also need adhesive remover. 3M makes some of you can use GooGone

From factory it's more than just tape. I did this two years ago, it's a bitch. The toughest part is getting the residue off the car, goo gone won't really cut it. I ended up just rolling it off with my fingers. Wish I had a heat gun at the time.

+1 above. Once you get as much of the sponge part of the adhesive off - roll the glue part off. Goo Gone does help a bit with getting rid of spongey part.
Once to tape around the spoiler. you can also try and run some dental floss and see if that cuts thru. |

Hello the OEM CF wing doesn't have tape it should come with an adhesive kit it will have a scraper ,sand paper , cleaning solvent and adhesive tube. you will have to sand the inside of the wing squeeze out the adhesive like tooth paste press on wing tape it down let it set then clean up excess.
I have a pic of a removed bad install CF i will add it later. Last edited by M5 Monster; 01-24-2016 at 12:38 PM.. Reason: adding pic |

My plan was to remove the old spoiler using whatever means but probably a combination of what everyone says... Heat up the spoiler before applying the 3m take with some adhesion promotor |

One other thing I recommend is finding the thinnest 3M tape. There are different widths and thicknesses. This will help mount it flush

I used heat Gun, Rubber prying tool and slowly lifting the spoiler, mind you that oem is like glue onto the trunk, so be patient. then after you take that spoiler off you'll have residue on the trunk you can use go gone put tons on your microfiber cloth and as you heat that adhesive start pushing that adhesive to one direction and it should start lifting

i bought two 3m automotive double sided tape; 1/2 wide x 1.14mm 1/4 wide x 0.74mm
i have a feeling 1/4 will work better.. def don't want to use oem bmw stuff as need this to come off with ease later.. i hope with heatgun keeping surface nice and warm before adhesion will help.. |

I replaced the spoiler on my E60 M5 and it was a royal PITA to get it to adhere properly......two body shop visits to get it sorted properly. They used the 3m tape and everything. I let it sit taped ETC but it kept lifting on the edges. Had it removed and reinstalled at another shop.....contours make it more challenging.

Posted a few further threads on this..I initially used 3m tape but then the spoiler was stolen within 12 hours of having it installed...Bought another one and used Betalink (did a DIY thread as well) and wish I used this stuff in the first place.. SOlid now!

for the removal process i've seen videos where dental floss is used after using the heat gun to soften the double sided tape.
