Modify stock exhaust for better sound?

While talking to my friend about exhaust options for my X6M, he mentioned there is a shop in town can mod the stock one.

Basically what they do is laser cut the muffler, and take out the insolations inside, and reweld the muffler, they can also change the exhaust tips to bigger ones while at it, total cost around 500 for taking out the insolations. According to him, he said he have heard some of the cars that the shop did, and it sounds 'awesome' and much louder.

My question is have anyone heard about this? Is this same as muffler delete? Will it affect the performance?

He suggest me to do it since for 500 bucks it wouldn't hurt, if I like it I can save myself 5k+ for an exhaust... Well, I do what the exhaust to be louder than stock.

Your thoughts?

I don't think you will gain performance at all. Instead you will have a raspy exhaust sound combined with drone.
I would say that it's worth to wait and make money for a known product

Someone always has to be the guinea pig with this type of mod.. When it comes to custom work and exhaust pulses and harmonics, its usually a suck it and see situation. You can often get lucky and hit a sweet spot, or of-course it can sound horrible too. Maybe we can crowd fund someone to try it? :P

At this moment , many company have developed an exhaust for the X5/X6M's.
You should just choose one that sound's good to you hears.

I wouldn't bother modifying the stuck one ...

Yea I also thought about lease end charge if I mess up my stock exhaust. For aftermarket one, I could simply take it off and sell it to gain back.

You're either going to get a sound you like of a sound you hate. To give you a better idea of how the sound is changed, search youtube and forum for e92 m3 ACM mod (auto couture motoring mod)

If I remember correctly, they don't pull all the packing out. Instead, they replace some of the perforated piping with straight pipe. Some sections of the perforated pipe remains because you need to control some of the volume.

You will most likely not have to worry about returning car to dealer. They will probably cut the top of the miffler, which cant be see on a lift.

I think it is plenty loud. Only thing IMO that would make it sound better is downpipes.
