F10 M5 as a used car buy???
I'm starting to look into a used car and was looking at F80 M3's but started thinking an F10 M5 might be a better car for me. I'm 47 with three kids. My Other/wife's car is a CPO X5.
I want something fast and fun. I had considered a used 997 but I need something somewhat practical and rear seats that can fit kids and double as a family car is a priority. I don't always have kids in the car so even a smaller car would work - like an M3... but more space would be nice. How reliable are the F10's? Do most of you have aftermarket or third-party warranties and would I be crazy to own a car like this off warranty without some kind of coverage? I'm curious as to whether there are any major reliability or maintenance cost differences between the M5 and M3? I know they are different cars and will drive differently - but in terms of reliability - how is the M5? For similar money I would probably be able to get a slightly newer M3, but the price difference is not as much as I would have expected, especially considering the M5 was quite a bit more $$ when new. In my preferred price point I'd probably be looking at 2015 or 2016 models that are not CPO and probably out of factory warranty. If I got an M3 I could probably get into a CPO but might still need / want an extended warranty as well... so either way I may be getting a warranty. Any insights or suggestions from any of you to someone in my shoes considering these two cars other than "test drive them"... ![]() Thanks

I got mine about 7 months ago and I haven't regretted. I think 2014 and newer is probably much better than my 2012. Earlier models suffer from steering vibration. I am pretty desensitized to having to top up my oil every 2 months and I've suffered two failed ignition coils thus far. But in comparison to my 2011 M3 sedan, I find the M5 much more luxurious, and comfortable. If you are looking for an edgier, sportier machine the M3 is better but for me now, the M5 better walks the line between sports car and luxury cruiser. The rear seat room is also much better and much more comfortable. Trunk is also noticeably larger

I have a 2012 M5 and a 2018 M3 ZCP.
I feel like the M3 is more sportier, better on road course track, etc. The M5 is classy but a complete beast. Especially if you're getting a 2015-2016 M5 I would definitely take that over the M3. Both of my cars weren't stock for long, but if you're keeping the M5 stock it'll be just as reliable as the M3. I also prefer the exhaust note more in the M5 as its a V8. |

I was in the same boat, almost 40 this year and 2 kids. Was considering a 911 then i thought when am i going to drive that and where do i put my kids... Decided on the M5 and now the whole family goes on trips and its the only car we drive on the weekends. Wife drives the XC90 R-Design during the week. I had an E36 M3 Evo in London that was fun but the M5 is a different animal altogether. I certainly don't regret it and had mine since October. Good luck.

Buy an aftermarket warranty if it doesn't have one. You can get one for around $4k, and I'd just consider this as part of the cost of the car.
I never bought an aftermarket warranty for my ford, Jeep, or Audi - but none of those had twin turbo's that could cost over $10k to replace ![]() |

I just got a 15 M5 with every option including comp pack for 49k with an extended comprehensive warranty from Zurich.
For the money I’m not sure a better car is out there. The 18s are nice with AWD and some upgraded interior stuff but parked side by side they look almost identical. I was considering a M3/4 but they’re just too small. The M5 is awesome because I can fit my kid and wife along with all of our kid stuff, get to Costco at 150+MPH do a full shop have room for everything in the trunk and drive home in comfort. If you’re still in your 20s get the M3/4 |

It was time to upgrade the wife. She's always wanted an M3 and I really like the M3c. We went to the dealership and test drove an 18 M3c, 16 X5M and finished off with a 16 M5c CPO. I would have preferred the M3 but it was too small for a "family" car. She chose the M5 and I wrote the check. We went with a dealer provided third party warranty for and additional 6.5k.
