As a misguided public safety measure, Denver's breed ban mandates the confiscation and killing of any dog fitting the description of a "pit bull" or a mixed breed dog having the physical characteristics of a "pit bull." Since May 2005, Denver has ordered and carried out the killing of more than 1,700 dogs merely because they were, or looked like, a "pit bull."


Even friendly, non-aggressive family dogs, like Forrest, belonging to the McGahey family, do not escape Denver's death warrant. When Denver Animal Control picked up Forrest, a lost dog from Adams County (borders Denver city limits) in July 2008, Chris McGahey was forced to hire an attorney to keep Denver from killing his dog. Forrest was incarcerated at the shelter for two months while Chris and his attorney Karen Breslin did everything possible to secure the release of Forrest. Pleading for Forrest's return, Chris promised to move to Ft Collins (57 miles north of Denver), pay any fines, and never again visit the city of Denver.


Not good enough for Denver.


After a loud public outcry barraged city officials with letters and phone calls, Forrest was kicked out of Colorado and surrendered to a rescue organization in St Louis, MO. Denver ordered that Forrest NOT be adopted back to his real family (Stray Dog Rescue, MO confirmed this and must now put Forrest up for adoption). Not only has Denver punished Chris by shipping his beloved dog out of state, Chris is now facing criminal charges against him for violating the breed ban ordinance - punishable by a $5,000 fine and possible jail time. Unbelievable!


Dear City Council members,

You have terrorized dog owners living in Denver and traveling thorough your fine city long enough. Until you repeal your breed ban and replace it with responsible legislation that will rightly punish irresponsible dog owners in possession of dangerous dogs - regardless of breed - you can look forward to a drop in tourism and fewer home buyers. We expect you will respond to complaints from the travel industry and Denver business owners since you have ignored the voices of outraged dog owners and numerous animal welfare organizations who have spoken out against breed bans and other breed discriminatory laws.

how could they take a childs happiness, childs love, family's love, a family member..

my english bulldog passed away last year, but if anyone tried taking/keeping him from me I would have broken into wherever he was being held, taken him back, and murdered everyone involved, and im not exagerrating. not the slightest bit.

unless there is something i am missing, its hard to feel bad for the guy. want to own a put bull? try not living where there is a ban on the breed. seems simple enough.

I could see a problem if it was a chiwowa or a lab or a golden retriever...pit bulls have a bad rap for a reason...there aggressive in the wrong hands...thugs, Michael Vick ass hole type...If I see a person irregardless of race walking a pit bull I am going to steer clear...too unpredictable...I had an englisg bull dog once also...one of the best dogs I ever had, great with any kid...m2c

Any dog can be breed to be aggressive or be a problem in the wrong hands. Issue is, they are killing in most cases normal dogs instead of dealing with the idiot owners. Even in the case of Vick, didn't they place most of the dogs?

Bullshit. I am never visiting Denver again, period. That is crap. I owned a pit a few years ago (my first time) and it was the sweetest dog I'd ever owned. We left babies on the ground and they'd end up with wet faces. Whoa! Vicious!

With all due respect, you are right that a dog can be "breed" to be aggressive exactly like pit bulls. Any dog can be "trained" to be aggressive. A Labrador retriever is "breed" to retrieve. A pit bull (over the years) has been breed to "fight" Try and take the will of a Lab or a Golden to retrieve, you throw a ball and it is almost impossible for them not to go get it. Sure, you can train a pit bull to be non-aggressive, just as you could train a lab to not fetch when you throw a ball, but, deep down inside you know exactly what both dogs are thinking when you put them in a situation of fetch or fight.

My neice is a vet in my local town and she will not accept a pit bull in her office unless it is muzzled. I dont blame her!!!!

The Michael Vik shit is so over... He should be given some mercy because if you think about it dogs that are introduced into that kind of shit are forever broken and have to be put to sleep because they are so aggressive... Last night on CBS after the McCain speach, there was a commercial about Viks dogs and how they get a "second chance", they seemed to be like normal dogs.. In most cases, serious dog fighters cut off the ears and tail so the other dog cant bite it during the fight..

There is obviously a severe issue with pitbulls in the Denver area..i.e. maimings, bites, etc.

Maybe they have a reason for it? Pitbulls are INNATELY aggressive animals..no beating around the bush about that.

im not saying that what he did was right.. dont get me wrong I have two Jindo's (korean dogs) that have been with me for more than eight years.. I'm just saying hes not as bad as most dog fighters.. not that it makes him a freakin hero or anything..
