Adding MMI for carplay/Android auto

I have a 2016 M3 with ID4 I put in an MMI for the carplay and android auto goodness. I was wondering if anyone has tried to just put on a touch screen to see if that works with the new MMI? Or do you have to replace the whole system? I ask because I found a 2018 screen for sale pretty cheap and would love to pull the trigger.

i can tell you it won't work, 2015/2016 does not come with touch screen, therefore, your car does NOT have touch screen module, if you connect the touch screen to your car. it will show NO SIGNAL. i tried and i have MMI installed in my 2015.

I was hoping the MMI could at least be touch for the features it offers Like apple/android auto stuff--. Guess I'm looking at an aftermarket android screen in the future or new car

Tommy seems to have done it? He doesnt have a touch screen Idrive system, he has a 2017.

Try his codings if you can. I think I would take the plunge if it works for you.
