Dreaded clunking sound from right rear when going over bumps?

The other week back I began to notice a "quiet" clunking sound coming from the right rear wheel. Only heard it unintentionally when I had no music on. I've been researching it and have come across a few threads of other owners who also mention hearing this sound. At this point i've been trying hard to pinpoint it, but can't tell if i'm over thinking it.

Hoping to get some insight from others. Here are some details:

-I can only hear the clunking sound when all music is off, at low parking lot speeds, when going over a speed bump. I can hear it faintly with, or without the windows open.

-The clunking sound is quiet enough that I cannot hear it without trying really hard to listen for it. Having a passenger in the car and asking them to keep an ear out, they were able to pick out the clunking sound without me describing it before hand.

-It sounds like it is coming from the right side rear

-It seems like the sound comes and goes? I've tested it at night with the roads empty. One night I think I can hear it, another night I think I can't.

-My car's production date is July 2012.

-I would describe the sound as follows: When driving slowly over a speed bump, after going over the bump, the last sound I hear after the creaks and noise of the car going over the bump itself, is almost like a container lightly rattling for a half second.

-On one of my test drives to pinpoint this, I even took everything out of the trunk to see if it was perhaps a detailer or engine oil bottle, or something like that that was moving around when going over bumps. No luck and it didn't change the sound.

-4 months ago I had a rear differential leak. It was repaired with a new gasket and topped off at the local dealership. I have not noticed any differences or changes with the car's driving in recent months. Including before and after the leak repair (we caught the leak early).

At this point i'm not sure if i'm overthinking this and it's in my head or not. What i'm wondering is if there is any specific part that I could look at to confirm if this is an issue? Or if this is one of those quirks of our M5? Anyone else have similar clunking noises? Thanks for the help!

Well. I had a clunk last year rear right.
I only heard it when reversing, a clunk just as it started to move backwards.
There was no indication of anything wrong when driving.

Was the bushing of number 11 and the control arm needed to be replaced.
All good after that.

Try going between D and R a few times and see if that provokes the sound to appear.

It sounds to me similar like the age old rear suspension spring to top mount bounce.
Some rear springs were changed under warranty for that,I had it on my M for a while on mild undulations on the road but it's completely disappeared now.

I had a clunk that would occur in reverse and first gear when going slow speeds. Didn't really bother me that badly. When I got under the car to replace the differential fluid, I noticed that one of the bolts to the bracing was missing. Replaced and no more clunk.

I *may* have had this. Similar to you I had to really listen for it with the music off. Probably only ever noticed it because my work had (excessive) speed bumps. Otherwise no ill effects, and I assumed it was the issue M5theonlyone referenced above

Pretty sure the KW V3s solved it, so just buy coilovers? =)

Thanks everyone. From what I gather it doesn't sound like there is anything detrimental with leaving it as is?

I'd like to get it addressed if it's something that's causing damage, but if it ends up disappearing eventually and the car hasn't had any related issues from it, I might just leave it be?
