Buying a high mileage F10 M5

Hi all,

I'm considering buying a 2015 F10 M5 that has just ticked over 100,000 miles. I spent a long time inspecting it, listening to the engine, and test driving it yesterday. It runs perfectly and has obviously been taken very good care of (I've owned 8 BMWs including M-Cars so I know what I'm looking for). It has full BMW main dealer service history, but can't see any sign of proactive maintenance such as rod bearings.

Seller is asking a very fair price, lower than what autotrader estimates it to be worth.

I'm wondering what you all think about buying it with this sort of mileage? I'd probably keep it for 4 - 5 years, then look to resell. I don't do huge mileage so I'd expect it to be at around 130,000 when it comes to selling it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks

Sounds like you've done your homework already.

With 100k miles, you are reasonably likely to run in to some issues over the next 4-5 years, so it's something to be prepared for. It may not be a major issue like engine failure, but with 100k miles be prepared for a collection of little things; soft close doors, axle seals, o2 sensors etc.

My 2014 F10 M5 is at 100k miles, no issues so far. Oil changes every 5k miles, proper warmup phase and specific maintenance per schedule (spark plugs, injectors, coils) by a proper BMW specialist will keep these cars in great shape. I didn’t have any issues yet, keeping my fingers crossed
I had the rod bearings and oil pump replaced just recently, but the rod bearings were still in good shape, so I would call it preventative maintenance for the peace of mind. Other than that, rock solid sedan for me and my family!
I’m the second owner, knowing the pre-owner personally and the M5 being cared for its entire life at BMW dealerships.
I bought it with around 50k miles and doubled the mileage without issues, not even eletrical problems. Suspension, comfort access, seats, iDrive, electronically and mechanically sound 🙏
And owning the third F10 M5 in a row, also being on my 13th BMW M car, I would recommend to buy with confidence, based on your assessment and availability of service records. These cars are built to last, if maintained properly, IMHO.

I think you've all put my mind at rest, thanks. I've done a lot of reading and it does seem like the F10 M5 is reliable if looked after properly. I think I might just treat myself...

If you want to own an F10 M5, go for it based on your report. But make sure you have a local shop you can trust in case an engine rebuild is needed at some point. It is impossible to predict what a rebuild would cost given as that depends on the nature of failure. Just don't go into it thinking/hoping it will just cost you brakes and oil for the next 5 years. And, if that is all it ends up costing you, that would be a bonus! One thing I don't know much about is DCT. I know people around who can reliably build a manual transmission, but I am not sure what one's options are if DCT fails (apart from swapping in a used unit).

However I would personally steer away from any car with this mileage, unless I was the one who enjoyed it.

Cars with 100k miles are problems waiting to happen. Of course you could be the lucky guy and avoid any issues just keeping on the regular maintenance.

But you can equally be the man who faces the sh*tstorm and has to rectify all issues the previous owners did not.

Is it worth the risk, given you plan to resell? Not at all. Unless you are looking for a keeper, a classic for your garage, or a car for your son.

I do understand you are tempted. A lot of car for little money, what's not to have? But we are in 2022 and our cars have already depreciated significantly..

After looking at this forum I have also started to look at f10 m5s. I found a f10 m5 comp package near me listed for a very good price. Car has 128k miles and the engine was rebuilt at 94k miles. Is this car worth it to buy, has all the options you could get on the car and is in very good condition and all services were done on time. Is this car worth it to purchase or not? Engine was rebuilt by a very reputable shop

I own a high mileage F10 M5 with a fully forged engine and it’s a total blast, since the potential weak spots are addressed.
If it is optioned as you wish and the overall cosmetic condition is great on top, then go for it. But please consider extra money for wear and tear parts, if they were not replaced yet, like the DCT clutch or brakes, etc. These cars are built to last if maintained right, I owned several higher mileage F10 and they all were solid!

Have the valve seals been replaced? This typically has to be done around 80k miles when the car won’t idle properly and you get oily smoke. It’s maybe a $6k job.

I’d take the car someplace to be inspected, probably get compression testing. Did you check codes or just use an OBD-II reader at minimum?
